Manchester United could have signed Benjamin Sesko for just £2.5million earlier in his career, but a report has claimed chiefs felt he was too expensive.

The Slovenian star is an up-and-coming striker talent who has caught the headlines in recent months. United have subsequently had links with a move for the RB Salzburg man.

In fact, a report has claimed that the Red Devils have made a first offer for Sesko.

Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain also fancy their chances of signing the goalscorer, though.

According to The Athletic, Man Utd could have signed Sesko, 19, for just £2.5million when he was 16.

At the time, he was making a name for himself as a youth player at NK Domzale in Slovenia. However, United deemed his price tag too expensive.

Salzburg, whose transfer model centres on signing some of the world’s best young talents, did not hesitate to sign Sesko instead.

After three years at the club, including a year on loan at FC Liefering in Austria, Sesko has now emerged as the latest first-team talent Salzburg have produced.

Indeed, he has already scored two goals in 13 caps for Slovenia and has scored 12 goals in 39 Salzburg games.

That means Salzburg now value the teenager at £50million. They are, for now, unwilling to sell Sesko because they have already sold Karim Adeyemi – another top young attacking talent – to Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Man Utd have fresh Sesko concerns

Nevertheless, The Athletic‘s report claims that Man Utd still have concerns about Sesko – but for different reasons.

This time around, chiefs don’t feel they can get the best out of the striker and are unsure if he will hit the ground running in the Premier League.

The Old Trafford club are after a striker who can adapt straight away. Cristiano Ronaldo at 37 is not a long-term option. What’s more, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are looking to prove themselves after poor form.

But that could be good news for Chelsea and PSG, who have also reportedly put an offer in for Sesko.

The Blues are also after a striker having allowed club-record signing Romelu Lukaku to return to Inter on loan.

Striker needs Salzburg stay

Sesko needs to stay at Salzburg at least for another six months to cement his status as a rising striker talent.

He has shown good early promise but he has yet to show it consistently. If he continues to score goals for club and country in the first half of the season, he could set himself up for a January move.

Erling Haaland followed that path when he came through at Salzburg in the 2019/20 season.

Scoring a hat-trick on his Champions League debut – and then against Liverpool – accelerated his path to stardom.

Sesko should therefore look to emulate that success, with Salzburg looking to shine again in the group stages.
