Newcastle are mulling a move for a Chelsea winger who hasn’t worked out at Stamford Bridge, and the type of deal the Blues wants is likely to remove Man Utd from the equation, per reports.
Chelsea don’t lack for options in the final third, though striking the right balance has proved tricky for two different managers this season.
The Blues are currently the lowest scorers of all teams currently situated in the top half of the Premier League. Both Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter have struggled to get a consistent tune out of their attacking players.
The likes of Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech have remained on the periphery. The former continues to draw strong suspicions his career in west London is coming to a close.
Pulisic was a £58m signing from Borussia Dortmund back in 2019, though despite showing flashes, has never truly caught fire.
The American, 24, has been indexed to Arsenal, Man Utd and Newcastle since the summer window closed. ESPN’s Mark Ogden recently detailed the extent of the Red Devils’ interest.
Ogden told ESPN late last month: “I’ve been told Manchester United will consider a loan move for Christian Pulisic when the window opens next month.
He continued: “Man Utd, Arsenal and Newcastle have been made aware by those that represent Pulisic that he is available and keen to move in January.
“I don’t believe Man Utd will be prepared to spend money in January to sign Pulisic. That applies to most clubs in the EPL right now – January isn’t a market where they tend to do big business.
“But a loan move is certainly a possibility because they’ve let Cristiano Ronaldo go. Erik ten Hag does need additional forwards to choose from.”
Chelsea, Man Utd expectations don’t align
However, the Daily Mail later reported Chelsea will not entertain a loan exit. Only a permanent sale will suffice, with the Blues reportedly valuing Pulisic around the £35m mark.
United are pre-occupied with PSV’s Cody Gakpo and seemingly do not want to spend heavily on two players who occupy the same role. As such, the door is ajar for another to walk through, and GiveMeSport reckon Newcastle could pounce.
Transfer insider Dean Jones told the outlet: “He is still someone that they’d be willing to consider. I think he does fit with where they’re headed in terms of recruitment.
“He wouldn’t be considered as a superstar coming in and that’s important. I think he would be a good fit for the style of play too.”
Pulisic is poised to enter the final 18 months of his contract and with an extension looking unlikely, his future is coming to a crossroads.
Newcastle are a far more attractive destination than before their Saudi takeover. Indeed, they may have Champions League football to offer next season, potentially at the expense of clubs like Chelsea.
Newcastle were known to be on the hunt for a new left winger last summer. Pulisic as well as Leeds Utd’s Jack Harrison were in their sights, though both stayed put.
The story regarding Pulisic may have a different ending six months on.
