Man Utd rival for Marcel Sabitzer signing revealed by Fabrizio Romano as true thoughts on Ten Hag style emerge
Manchester United risked losing out on Marcel Sabitzer to another Premier League suitor on deadline day, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Sabitzer signed for Man Utd on loan for the rest of the season on the final day of the January transfer window. The midfielder arrived at Old Trafford from Bayern Munich to account for an injury to Christian Eriksen.
There was plenty of competition for Sabitzer’s signature, despite his downturn in fortunes with Bayern. Ultimately, he set his heart on a move to Man Utd.
Yet his transfer was not a foregone conclusion. According to Romano, Sabitzer was on the radar of Newcastle United as well.
Romano told his YouTube channel: “The player was offered to Chelsea, was not discussed by Chelsea, so Chelsea were not interested in signing Marcel Sabitzer in the final hours of the market.
“Man Utd were really interested because Chelsea were busy with Enzo Fernandez. Man Utd wanted Marcel Sabitzer as a priority target, but also the player was really keen on Man Utd. The player was not considering other options.
“We also had some rumours on Newcastle because they were looking for that kind of player and they considered that kind of opportunity.
“But they decided also not to proceed because Sabitzer was super keen on joining Manchester United, in love with Erik ten Hag’s ideas of football, and so this is why for Sabitzer, the hijack was refused. Nothing was in danger.
“Man Utd was [the] only way to go for Sabitzer as [the] perfect midfielder after the injury of Christian Eriksen.”
Newcastle now a threat to Man Utd despite Marcel Sabitzer preference
Sabitzer has already told Man Utd’s official media channels that his ideas of football should align with Ten Hag’s. It seems there is truth behind his claims.
The Austria international made his debut for Man Utd on February 4 in their win over Crystal Palace. He will have to prove he can succeed for Ten Hag on the pitch over the next few months.
In turn, it will be interesting to see whether he could extend his Man Utd career by means of a permanent transfer. TEAMtalk understands such an outcome is possible.
Clubs like Newcastle could theoretically be keeping track of Sabitzer in case he returns to sender at the end of his loan spell. But there is no indication yet that they will rival Man Utd for a summer move.
The former RB Leipzig star remains under contract with Bayern Munich until 2025.
In the meantime, Newcastle will have to make do with what they already have in midfield. That includes the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Joelinton.
Clearly, their midfield department is at an earlier stage of its evolution than Man Utd’s has been.
But the Magpies have become more of a threat for clubs like Man Utd on the pitch this season. Given this case, the same is evidently applying in the transfer market too.
In Sabitzer’s case, though, moving to Man Utd remained the most attractive option. He must now back himself up on the pitch with his performances to prove why he belongs at a club of their stature.
