Manchester United have arrived at an agreement in principle to sign Martin Dubravka from Newcastle, it has been revealed by Fabrizio Romano.
Manchester United have been on the lookout for a new backup goalkeeper since allowing Dean Henderson to join Nottingham Forest on loan earlier this summer. There have been links with a number of targets.
But Dubravka has emerged as one of the most realistic candidates to provide competition for David De Gea in the Manchester United goal.
There have been some doubts about the formula of the transfer, but things have been progressing with personal terms. Now, the arrangement between the two clubs is almost in place too.
According to transfer expert Romano, Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle for Dubravka’s transfer.
It will be a loan deal itself, containing a £5million option to buy.
There is no suggestion that the clause would be obligatory, as it was recently claimed Newcastle would prefer. But the deal has managed to get down to the final stages.
With that in mind, it could be a matter of time before Manchester United are welcoming their new deputy to De Gea. Dubravka would be bringing Premier League experience with him after four-and-a-half years with Newcastle.
Decent opportunity for Dubravka
The Slovakia international is no longer number one at St James’ Park due to the recent acquisition of Nick Pope. Therefore, it may be preferable for him to be a backup for a club with European football on offer than one without.
Although unlikely to dislodge De Gea for most Premier League matches, there could be some decent opportunities for Dubravka at Old Trafford. His gametime could come either in the Europa League or domestic cups in particular.
And at the age of 33, it could be about time to take a step back in terms of playing time anyway. Hence, progressing to a bigger club in the process seems to make sense from his perspective.
It looks as if this is a move that will be going through before the September 1 transfer deadline. In that event, Dubravka could be the fifth new arrival at Old Trafford this summer, after Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.
