Manchester United have reportedly come to a decision about the future of their in-demand midfielder, Scott McTominay.
McTominay is a Man Utd academy graduate who has earned 191 senior appearances for the club to date. Of those, 21 have come this season, but he has only managed to start six times in the Premier League under Erik Ten Hag.
Over the summer, Man Utd brought in Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. Both of the new arrivals have had an impact in the territory where McTominay would have been playing more regularly before.
Therefore, there has been some speculation that the Scotland international could leave the club. Newcastle United have been linked, for example. Although their head coach, Eddie Howe, denied any interest during a press conference on Friday.
Still, McTominay’s situation has alerted a range of Premier League suitors, according to 90min.
The report claims that five clubs other than Newcastle have made approaches to find out if McTominay will be available. Everton, Leeds United, Leicester City, Southampton and West Ham United are the admirers in question.
Unlike Man Utd or Newcastle, all of them are currently in the bottom half of the Premier League. Therefore, they will be looking for reinforcements who can help them avoid relegation.
McTominay is accustomed to playing at a higher level, having spent his entire career to date with Man Utd. Yet he could get more regular gametime by moving to a different club.
Man Utd and McTominay decide against separation
However, 90min has revealed that such a proposition is not currently on his mind. Besides, Man Utd would stand in the way of any deal anyway.
Indeed, the Red Devils are said to have told anyone who has asked for McTominay that he will not be available to move in January.
The 26-year-old remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2025, with the option for a further year.
Ten Hag still thinks McTominay is someone who can have a future in Manchester. Therefore, United are not entertaining offers for him at this moment in time.
It means that the clubs who thought they may have had a chance of luring him away will have to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements.
None of them had made an official bid yet, anyway. But at least they now know not to waste their time. Instead, they can focus on more realistic targets.
McTominay, for his part, will continue to compete with Casemiro, Eriksen, Fred and Bruno Fernandes for a place in Man Utd’s midfield.
As well as McTominay, Man Utd have also reportedly decided another member of their squad will be staying despite interest from elsewhere.
