Burnley and Netherlands attacker Wout Weghorst has emerged as a shock loan target for Manchester United, as their search for a new striker continues.

Weghorst, 30, is currently on loan at Turkish outfit Besiktas, where he has impressed in scoring eight goals in 16 appearances.

The 6ft 6in forward’s latest strike came in a 2-1 win against Kasimpasa on Saturday. And after the game he appeared to wave goodbye to the Besiktas fans.

It is understood there is no break clause in the loan from Burnley, so talks would involve all three clubs.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has made no secret of his desire to bring in another attacker following Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious exit.

However, the Dutchman knows he is working under financial constraints following a huge summer outlay. Meanwhile, talk of the Glazers selling up also means big funds are unlikely to be available in January.

Weghorst arrived at Turf Moor with high expectations last January after a £12m move from German side Wolfsburg. However, he only scored twice as the Clarets were relegated to the Championship.

Weghorst comes with decent pedigree

He did make a big impact at the World Cup though. Memorably scoring two late goals in the Netherlands’ epic World Cup quarter-final loss to eventual champions Argentina.

Despite Weghorst’s struggles at Burnley, he did score 70 goals in 144 games for Wolfsburg. To that end, he does have a decent pedigree at European level.

A loan move also makes sense, given United’s big summer spend, while Weghorst would give Ten Hag a completely different central option to the likes of Anthony Martial and the in-form Marcus Rashford.

United are back in action on Tuesday evening when they host Charlton in the Carabao Cup last eight.
