Man Utd are drafting up the official paperwork after reaching a verbal agreement to sign Christian Eriksen, though one usually straightforward hurdle is looming large, per reports.

The Red Devils’ summer window is finally clicking into gear. An official confirmation on the signing of Tyrell Malacia could come later today once the Dutchman passes the second part of his medical. Updates on their pursuits of Frenkie de Jong and Lisandro Martinez can be found in today’s Euro Paper Talk.

Elsewhere, Manchester United have now convinced Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen to call Old Trafford his new home.

The Athletic were first to report the news, though it has since been backed up by numerous outlets including the Sun and Manchester Evening News.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported Eriksen has ‘verbally agreed’ to join Erik ten Hag’s side. He has communicated he wishes to join United and is prepared to accept their offer of a three-year deal.

Eriksen is currently a free agent after his six-month contract at Brentford expired. The Bees had also lodged an offer for the 30-year-old, though United’s was believed to be more financially lucrative.

Eriksen had been deliberating over his future, though has now settled on joining the Ten Hag revolution.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano added another snipper of information to the news. He tweeted a direct talk between Ten Hag and Eriksen had proved key to the breakthrough.

The Athletic added the official documentation is currently being drafted up. The only potential barrier to a deal is Eriksen’s medical.

Medical a ‘significant hurdle’

Medicals are generally a straightforward process that very few players fail. However, the outlet describe the process in this instance as a ‘significant hurdle that needs to be navigated.’

That stems from Eriksen’s well-documented heart issue during Euro 2020.

The Dane collapsed on the pitch after suffering cardiac arrest. He was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, something that prevented him from continuing his club career in Italy with Inter Milan.

Yet Eriksen was able to pass a medical at Brentford and the same green light is expected at Man Utd.

Eriksen has plenty left to give

Any doubts over what type of player Eriksen would be following his heart issue were emphatically put to bed last season.

The playmaker arrived at Brentford at a time when their season was in freefall. The Dane not only helped steady the ship, but produced a series of virtuoso displays that thrust the Bees all the way up to 13th position.

His primary position is central midfield. Though he is capable of shifting between a deep-lying playmaker or further forward to play behind the striker.

That would suggest Bruno Fernandes may have more competition for his place than he’s been accustomed to in recent times.
