Manchester United have reportedly agreed a deal for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez worth £46million, with three Old Trafford stars now vulnerable.

United have endured a frustrating summer transfer window so far. While Tyrell Malacia has come in as a new left-back, they have yet to add anyone else to their squad.

New United boss Erik ten Hag left is looking towards his connections at former club Ajax for transfer inspiration.

The Dutchman wants ex-Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong and Brazilian attacker Antony. But as it stands, Man Utd are closest to signing versatile Argentine star Martinez.

The Red Devils have had £38million and £43million bids rejected for the 24-year-old. Ajax, initially under no pressure to sell, had reportedly raised their asking price to nearer £50million.

However, the Daily Mirror now reports that United are closing in on Martinez for £46million.

Martinez has turned the screw in recent days, telling Ajax that he wants to leave and wants a deal done as soon as possible amid the start of pre-season across Europe.

And his actions have forced Ajax to buckle. United chiefs held a meeting with their Ajax counterparts on Wednesday, during which they struck the deal.

90min adds more detail on the finances of the Martinez to Man Utd deal. Ajax will reportedly receive €50million (£42.3million) up front, with the rest in add-ons and bonuses. The source says the two clubs have a ‘broad agreement’ over the €55million fee.

Arsenal were once firmly in the race for the Argentina international, having also submitted a bid worth £38million.

However, they have turned their attentions to a move for Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo in recent weeks.

Lisandro Martinez transfer domino effect

The Mirror‘s report claims that Martinez’s arrival will signal exits for three United defenders.

Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly’s futures will all become highly uncertain. Indeed, Ten Hag wants Martinez to slot in as a fourth centre-back option alongside Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

However, Martinez can operate as a left-back and in defensive midfield.

The addition will be a welcome one for United, who have struggled in talks to sign De Jong from Barcelona.

United need strong statement

The Martinez deal – if it gets over the line – will also be a welcome one compared to the major deals taking place elsewhere in the Premier League.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal have all made statement signings. Chelsea are joining them by signing Raheem Sterling from City after Arsenal signed Gabriel Jesus from the champions.

United therefore need to step up and get a sizeable deal done.

The fact that Martinez is another centre-back option amid the likes of Varane and Maguire may take some of the gloss off the deal.

But at least it is a statement of intent from the Red Devils, especially as they look like beating Arsenal to his signature.
