Man Utd success holds key to Ten Hag future as he’s told ‘to resign’ in one instance
Former Manchester United man Paul Parker has told Erik ten Hag he “needs to resign” in one instance, depending on the success of the season.
Ten Hag seems to be the manager that United have been screaming out for since Sir Alex Ferguson retired from his post after the 2012/13 season.
That campaign was the last one in which the Red Devils won the Premier League. They’ve come close twice since, finishing second under Jose Mourinho and then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
However, neither manager lasted long in the aftermath of their respective near triumphs. After a sixth-placed finish under Ralf Rangnick last season, change was clearly needed.
Ten Hag has breathed life back into United following that poor campaign. The Red Devils are currently third in the league and only three points behind local rivals Manchester City, in second.
What’s more, they are in contention to win another three trophies as well as the potential that they might win the league.
Indeed, they’re in the fifth round of the FA Cup, they could soon advance to the Europa League round of 16 and they’re in the final of the League Cup.
As such, this could end up being one of the most successful seasons in their history.
Ten Hag told ‘to resign’ in one instance
That would obviously be a massive achievement for United. However, former United man Parker sees it as something that could end Ten Hag’s United career.
“It would be a massive achievement if Man United manage to win a quadruple this season but it still wouldn’t be the ultimate as it isn’t the Champions League,” he said, quoted by the Express.
“But it would be really incredible, and honestly if it is going to happen, Erik ten Hag needs to resign after that and not carry on. Because he will never be able to surpass that.”
It’s a strange take to think a manager would want to resign after one of the most successful seasons in a club’s history.
Indeed, he and United might never match the feat of winning the quadruple. However, they could build upon it and create a dynasty that continues for years.
While it’s early days, if Ten Hag was to inspire his side to that feat, he could become a legendary figure in United’s history for years to come. If he was to resign after one season, he’d never fully get the chance to do so.
Quadruple a ‘possibility’ but not ‘realistic’
“But I have not heard a single Man United fan speak about this as a possibility but we can’t ignore that it in theory is a possibility. But one thing is theory and another thing is being realistic and I don’t think that it is possible,” Parker added.
“But I think it’s silly that it hasn’t been mentioned by a single person or any media.”
It’ll certainly be a tough task for United to win the quadruple. They’ve not really been in contention in the league up until this point, and should leaders Arsenal win their game in hand Ten Hag’s side will be eight points behind them.
What’s more, there are still four rounds of the FA Cup to go, as well as four rounds of the Europa League if they are to beat Barcelona to get to the round of 16.
United do look to be the favourites in the League Cup. That Nick Pope is unavailable for Newcastle United has given them an advantage from the off.
While it’ll be tough, and there’s a long way to go, it’s not out of the realms of possibility that United could win all four competitions.
