Man Utd takeover: Ten Hag future assessed by two potential new owners after first Ratcliffe meeting
Erik ten Hag is on course to remain Manchester United manager under either of the bidders hoping to take over ownership of the club, it has been revealed.
Ten Hag took charge as Man Utd manager in the summer, leaving Ajax to replace Ralf Rangnick. Despite losing his first two Premier League matches, the Dutch tactician has gone on to inspire some new confidence at Old Trafford.
Recently, he led Man Utd to their first trophy since 2017 by overcoming Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.
Man Utd have also reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Europa League under Ten Hag’s management. In the Premier League, meanwhile, they are in contention to finish in the top four.
Off the pitch, though, there could soon be a significant change at the club. The Glazer family have been listening to offers to take over ownership of the club.
Two prospective new ownership groups are in the running: those respectively led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim.
Now, an update from the Daily Mirror has revealed what both think about Ten Hag. According to the report, under either regime, the 53-year-old would be in line to receive a contract extension.
Sometimes when new owners take charge of a club, they want to bring in their own head coach. For example, in 2022, Chelsea switched out Thomas Tuchel for Graham Potter a few months into the Todd Boehly era.
But it appears Ten Hag’s job is safe regardless of who takes the reins in the Man Utd boardroom.
In fact, everyone has been impressed enough by Ten Hag to follow through with the club’s current plans of extending his contract.
When arriving at Man Utd last summer, Ten Hag signed a contract until the end of the 2024-25 season, with the option of an additional year.
However, the Red Devils already want to reward him for the progress they have made under his guidance.
Ten Hag met Ratcliffe on Friday
Ten Hag even briefly met Ratcliffe on Friday when Britain’s richest man visited the Carrington training complex.
At his press conference that afternoon to preview an FA Cup game against Fulham, Ten Hag said: “I just met them and shook hands but I am focused on the game.
“We play a big game on Sunday and all our focus is on that. Others in the club are dealing with potential investors.
“My job is focus on the game so let’s talk about the game Fulham. It is a big tie so let’s get ready for that.”
If the Ineos CEO manages to buy Man Utd, Ten Hag could soon be working for him, carrying on the good job he has been doing in recent months.
Ten Hag has managed Man Utd in 45 matches so far, winning 32 of them. He seems to have restored some stability and optimism at the club, perhaps more so than any other manager they have had post-Sir Alex Ferguson.
Therefore, a reward could be on its way in the shape of an improved contract, which will allow Ten Hag to further visualise how he can carry the club forward.
