According to reports, Man Utd target Yann Sommer has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Bayern Munich over a potential summer transfer elsewhere.

The Red Devils were heavily linked with Sommer before he joined Bayern Munich during the winter transfer window earlier this year.

The Bundesliga giants brought him in from Borussia Monchengladbach after it was confirmed that Manuel Neuer will be unavailable for the remainder of this season as a result of a leg fracture.

David De Gea is United’s current first-choice goalkeeper. He is expected to pen a new contract in the coming weeks but the Premier League giants are still expected to sign a new shot-stopper this summer.

Sommer could become available for transfer in the summer. He has featured heavily for Bayern Munich in recent months but he will drop behind Neuer in the pecking order once the Germany international has returned to full fitness.

Journalist Christian Falk is reporting that Sommer ‘will be allowed to leave’ this summer if ‘Neuer returns as the No.1’.

He claims Sommer ‘is a man in the focus of Manchester United’ and he ‘wants to be the No.1 for a club’ before next summer’s European Championships.

‘Everybody is keeping a close eye on Manuel Neuer’s situation following his return to the pitch. He’s already training with the team. Everyone knows he will need time but he’s getting along with his return program very well,’ Falk wrote for Caught Offside.

‘They think in about one or two months they can concretely say ‘yes, he can do it again’. I heard there was a gentleman’s agreement made with Yann Sommer when there were the initial negotiations to come to Bayern that if Manuel Neuer returns as the No.1 – and Tuchel made no secret of the fact that he will be No.1 if fit – Sommer will be allowed to leave.

‘The money isn’t too much for a Premier League club at €8m. It gets a bit more expensive if Bayern win the championship – it could get to €10m.

‘Manchester United were very interested and were in talks with Bayern when they brought in Sommer. They’re still interested, there’s the situation with David de Gea to consider, I think they have to do something in this position.

‘Sommer is a man in the focus of Manchester United for the position. Bayern Munich would sell him if they are sure Neuer is back.

‘Yann Sommer ultimately wants to play in the Euros in 2024, so he wants to be the No.1 for a club and not challenge Manuel Neuer for his place.’
