Frenkie de Jong will only leave Barcelona this summer if he can move to Manchester United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea, according to reports.

Just as you think you have a mild understanding of the situation surrounding De Jong’s future, another report hits you in the face.

De Jong’s future remains up in the air during this seemingly never-ending transfer saga, which has dominated too many column inches over the summer.

Transfer gossip: Juve want Manchester United striker but Ronaldo is stuck at Old Trafford

A report this morning indicated that Man Utd were still confident of getting a deal over the line as the only stumbling block was De Jong’s personal business with Barcelona.

It is understood that the Catalan giants owe the Netherlands international around £17m in deferred wages and bonuses from during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Former Man Utd defender Gary Neville has even called on De Jong to take legal action against the La Liga club with other reports claiming that they have also asked him to take a pay cut of almost 50 per cent to remain at the Camp Nou.

Despite Barcelona seemingly taking the p*ss, the line from most reliable sources of information in the English press is that Man Utd have received enough encouragement to continue their pursuit.

But the Spanish press continue to flip flop between narratives with Spanish newspaper Sport claiming De Jong will ‘only agree to leave if it is for Chelsea’.

The same newspaper brought you the news of a meeting between Barcelona and De Jong yesterday in which they discussed the terms he would have to agree to in order to prolong his stay at the club.

And now Sport reckon it’s ‘not too clear if he is going to accept a pay cut after postponing part of his salary due to the pandemic’. And why would he?

De Jong and Barcelona ‘have frozen any decision’ for the time being with the Dutchman as he struggles to understand how the Catalans are ‘paying millionaire transfers’ but asking him to reduce his salary.

Man Utd have a broad agreement of around €85m to sign De Jong this summer and he is ‘very grateful to [Erik] Ten Hag’ for pursuing him but he wants to move to Chelsea, if anywhere, in this transfer window.

However, there is a ‘problem’ with a potential move to Chelsea with the Blues not willing to pay as much as Man Utd for De Jong with Barcelona desperate to move him on if he doesn’t agree to lower his wages.
