Man Utd may require a large dose of patience if they’re to sign Cody Gakpo this summer, though Fabrizio Romano has provided a positive update on their chances.

The Dutch winger, 23, rose to prominence last season when plundering 21 goals and 15 assists across all competitions for PSV Eindhoven. He’s picked up exactly where he left off in the current campaign, with three goals and two assists already notched in just four appearances.

Gakpo is reportedly valued around the £35m mark and had drawn links with Arsenal earlier this summer. However, more recent reports have put him firmly in the sights of Man Utd.

The Red Devils are seeking a versatile forward capable of playing across the entire frontline. Ajax’s Antony remains their primary target, per Fabrizio Romano. However, a whopping new £80m valuation could scupper a move.

Gakpo represents a far more cost-effective alternative and he is known to Erik ten Hag through his time in the Netherlands.

What’s more, according to Romano, Gakpo is enthralled by the thought of moving to the Premier League.

That meshes with the Telegraph’s recent reporting. They stated the winger is ready to say yes to moving to Manchester.

Romano also stated signing Gakpo has been discussed internally by Old Trafford chiefs. While a move is far from advanced, Gakpo does at least appear a genuine – and gettable – target.

Cody Gakpo may be a waiting game

However, according to Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth, the keyword at Manchester United will be patience.

That’s because PSV are running the gauntlet in the Champions League qualification phase at present.

A superb comeback helped them progress past Monaco at the third round stage on Tuesday night. PSV scored in the 89th minute to take the second leg into extra time. Luuk de Jong then completed the comeback when scoring the winner in the 109th minute.

Their reward is another two-legged tie in the play-off round against Rangers. The second leg won’t take place until August 24, meaning PSV won’t know their European fate until just one week before the September 1 transfer deadline.

As such, Sheth suggested PSV are unlikely to sell someone as influential as Gakpo until that time.

“Manchester United are definitely in the market for a forward,” Sheth told Sky Sports. “We’ve mentioned in the past 24 hours PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

“Erik ten Hag knows him very well from the Dutch league but with this one they might need to wait for a while as PSV don’t want any kind of distraction before they play Rangers in the Champions League play-offs.

“I can’t see them doing any business on Gakpo before that tie. At the very least, they’ll wait to see what their Champions League fate will be.

“Depending on where they are, that might dictate what they do with Gakpo.”
