Manchester United have been told that a transfer deal for Lille striker Jonathan David could be the perfect move for them after they parted company with club legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Red Devils announced on Tuesday evening that they had terminated Ronaldo’s contract after the damning interview in which he attacked several different aspects of the club as well as individuals.

United are now expected to be in the market for a new No.9 when the transfer window opens in January.

David is one of a number of names linked with a switch to Old Trafford, including the likes of Dusan Vlahovic and Lautaro Martinez.

But transfer insider Fabrizio Romano believes David is just the sort of signing United need to fill the void.

The 22-year-old has excelled in France after moving from Belgian side Gent.

David has scored 41 goals in 111 appearances for Lille, including nine in 15 games so far this season.

The talented forward is expected to have a huge future. He is also available for a fee in the region of £43.1million (€50m).

And Romano told CaughtOffside: “Personally, I always mention Jonathan David as smart solution for United or other clubs.

“I already said it few times; young, talented, available for €50m. But let’s see what United decide to do.”

Romano also feels that Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford would probably have to go down as a mistake.

He added: “I think nothing will change the relationship between Ronaldo and Man Utd fans. It will stay forever because the history will always be there.

“But joining Man United in that moment of his career was probably a mistake purely from a sporting point of view.”

Other striker options also on United radar

Another name linked with a January switch is France forward Marcus Thuram who, like David, is currently at the World Cup in Qatar.

The Borussia Monchengladbach forward has scored 13 times in 17 appearances this season.

Thuram can leave Gladbach for as little as £8.7m (€10m) in the January window. That is down to the fact that he is out of contract in the summer.

And while David is clearly the name Romano thinks suits United best. There is a huge difference between the £43m he would cost compared to Thuram’s bargain fee.

The Red Devils could also have the small matter of a takeover to deal with in the coming months.

The Glazer family have decided that it’s time to sell and the first major suitor to come forward, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is ready to make his move.

Ten Hag’s men are not back in action until December 21 when they host Burnley in the Carabao Cup.
