Manchester United could be about the leave the door wide open in Arsenal’s chase for Lisandro Martinez due to concerns over the Ajax defender’s height.

The Red Devils have been strongly tipped to make a move for the talented centre-back, who worked under new Old Trafford chief Erik ten Hag in the Netherlands.

However, they are yet to make an official approach for the 24-year-old. And from Ajax’s point of view they are keen to keep the player they rate at £43million.

As for the Gunners, they also hold a firm interest in Martinez. Indeed, they are already said to have indicated to Ajax they are willing to pay £25.8m for the versatile Argentine.

That figure certainly falls short of what the Dutch giants want. But The Athletic’s David Ornstein claims Arsenal‘s hopes have been boosted by United‘s change in stance on a deal for Martinez

Ornstein states the Red Devils have decided Martinez, who is 5ft 9in, may not meet their physical requirements for a defensive role.

He told HaytersTV: “Lisandro Martinez is a firm target for Arsenal for the left centre-back role and he can also operate at left-back in the mind of Arsenal.

“He’s a player that Mikel Arteta wants to sign. Arsenal have had an approach worth around €30m rejected by Ajax, that interest will not drop.

Martinez height an issue for Man Utd

“The question is who else is interested in him? Of course, he’s played for Erik ten Hag in the past. And there are reports ten Hag would like to bring him to United now.

“The problem is that Manchester United are focusing on Frenkie de Jong and Christian Eriksen. There may also be concerns if Lisandro Martinez is tall enough for the left centre-back role. I don’t know of Manchester United looking to do what Arsenal would like, which is to use him at left-back as well.

“As things stand, I think Arsenal is the most probable destination for Lisandro Martinez. The player is said to be keen on a move. But this could have twists and turns with a number of clubs admiring such a good player.”

So, as things stand, it looks like Arsenal rather than United snapping up the Argentine.
