Ryan Gravenberch has revealed that his transfer promise to Bayern Munich has seen him move to Germany and not Manchester United.

The former Ajax midfielder became a man in demand for this summer’s transfer window after an exciting rise. The 20-year-old rose through the ranks at the Amsterdam club to become a key first-team star.

After breaking through in the 2019/20 season, Gravenberch cemented his place at the forefront of the team. As such, Bayern were the frontrunners to sign the player this summer.

Gravenberch in fact recently confirmed his move to the German champions in a deal worth €25million (£21million).

However, new Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag – who has also left Ajax after the end of the season – wanted to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford.

Gravenberch, only had eyes for Bayern once they made their offer – especially with former Ajax team-mate Noussair Mazraoui going there too.

“Manchester United is a very big and nice club. But I already had such a good feeling at Bayern and I had them given my word,” the player told De Telegraaf.

“I like the fact that Nous [Mazraoui] is going there [Bayern] too. It’s always nice when you already know someone.”

Gravenberch added that he would also have rejected Man Utd if Ajax had made a better contract offer than they did.

“In the end Ajax made me a royal offer, and if Bayern hadn’t made such a good impression, I would certainly have signed,” he added.

“I walked around there for 12 years and Ajax has made me the player I am today.

“I think it is logical that Ajax earns something from me, because the club has always been good to me. We part as good friends. My love for the club will always remain.”

Gravenberch leaves Ajax with 103 appearances, 12 goals and 13 assists.

Ten Hag eyes De Jong

As a result of Gravenberch signing for Bayern, Ten Hag is now looking to bring Frenkie de Jong to United.

The Dutchman also worked with Ten Hag at Ajax before moving to Barcelona in the summer of 2019.

De Jong has said that his preference is to stay at Camp Nou, but Barcelona could yet sell him to raise funds.

Either way, both players are starring for the Netherlands, who have no shortage of exciting midfield talent at their disposal.
