Manchester United are reportedly considering a surprise move to prise Leandro Trossard away from Brighton amid fears his time at the AMEX could be drawing to a close.

United’s new manager Erik ten Hag has an enormous task on his hands to rejuvenate the flagging Red Devils. Labouring to a sixth-placed finish in 2021/22, they finished a huge 35 points behind champions Manchester City. Never has the chasm been higher.

Indeed, the Dutchman has been told he may need as many as 10 new signings by predecessor Ralf Rangnick given their struggles. That, though, looks highly unplausible with more outgoings than incomings expected this summer.

In that regard, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic are already confirmed as having left the club. And others too may be on their way with a report suggesting as many as 12 players may depart this summer.

Truth be told, Ten Hag will likely focus on quality over quantity when it comes to new United additions. To that end, supporters should probably expect no more than three or four new additions.

Hopefully that business will soon get underway at Old Trafford. Indeed, reports on Thursday claim their opening bid for Frenkie de Jong has been accepted by Barcelona.

That will set United back an initial £51.2m, with the total package ultimately costing up to £68.3m.

Ten Hag battling Newcastle for bargain signing

And with Ten Hag also wanting to strengthen his defence and attack, he will have to consider carefully how best to spend the club’s money.

Indeed, the Dutch coach may have to invest shrewdly and use the market to his advantage.

And it’s for that reason why Belgian outlet Voetbalkrant claims the Red Devils are exploring a possible deal for Trossard.

The 17-times capped Belgium winger only has a year left on his deal and talks over an extension have yet to see an agreement reached. As a result, the Seagulls will likely be forced to listen to offers for the 27-year-old if he doesn’t commit to a new deal.

And that, according to Voetbalkrant has given Manchester United belief they can lure him to Old Trafford on a cut-price deal.

The article suggests Newcastle are also keen, with their director of football Dan Ashworth responsible for bringing Trossard to the AMEX.

However, it is the Red Devils who are seemingly leading the chase for the player.

Trossard admits he is ready to take the next step in his career and is seemingly open to a move to Old Trafford.

Leandro Trossard ready for next step up

Discussing his World Cup ambitions and what the future holds, Trossard did not hold back when questioned last month.

“The national team is waiting again. There is not much vacation. Of course, the World Cup in Qatar beckons. I think I’ve proven that I belong. But I don’t have a crystal ball,” Trossard said.

“That also applies to my future. I still have a contract with Brighton until the summer of 2023.

“Will the big six come knocking for me at Brighton? We will see. If I really feel ready for that step up, I’ll get into it, but I realise every day I’m not bad at Brighton.”

He has proven one of the most consistent performers in Graham Potter’s side and is yet another of the Seagulls’ astute signings.

Since arriving from Genk, Trossard has 18 goals in 104 appearances for Brighton. That record includes 21 goal involvements from his last 73 appearances.

Clearly he is a player of some talent and he does appear ready for the next step up. A proven Premier League player, he could prove a useful option for United if the price is right.

With Cristiano Ronaldo staying to lead the attack, it is the supporting cast which Ten Hag is likely to bolster. As such, a move for Trossard could be the perfect option for the Red Devils.

Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal has aired his one major gripe with claims that Jurrien Timber will depart Ajax for United this summer.
