David de Gea will reportedly snub Saudi Arabia after being handed a new contract by Manchester United with Diogo Costa now a major doubt to be signed.

De Gea, 32, has just competed his 12th season at Old Trafford after joining from Atletico Madrid in June 2011. The Spain international has enjoyed 545 outings, with 415 of those coming in the Premier League. He won the Premier League Golden Glove in 2022-2023, keeping 17 clean sheets from 38 top-flight appearances.

And it helped the Red Devils secure a return to the Champions League, with a third-place finish.

Although a regular in the side and with the Golden Glove award, De Gea was not without his critics. He made a number of unforced errors leading to opposition goals.

A few pundits had their say on the matter, with former United skipper Roy Keane not holding back.

The Irishman made it clear he wanted to see the Spaniard move on this summer, citing his ‘many mistakes’.

But it appears as though Keane will not get his wish if the latest report is to be believed.

De Gea is due to fall out of contract at the end of June. He is said to be among a number of high-profile players to have been offered vast sums of money to play in Saudi Arabia.

But it seems as though the Madrid-born ace will snub the chance to play in the Middle East and remain with United.

De Gea deal ready to be signed

Manchester United are in the market for a new back-up keeper this summer. They will want a decent shot-stopper to put pressure on De Gea who, according to Dean Jones, looks set to stay.

“The contract is basically drawn up at this point for him, so it’s difficult to see a situation whereby the De Gea doesn’t stay now on a new contract,” he told GIVEMESPORT.

“So it’s really about finding that backup goalkeeper.”

Jack Butland acted as De Gea’s back-up last season but he has now joined Rangers. And there is talk that a high-profile goalkeeper is being targeted

Costa could challenge De Gea

Reports in Portugal suggest United are keen to sign Porto keeper Diogo Costa.

It has been said that a deal is close, with the Portugal international’s price tag set at around £65m.

However, De Gea inking fresh terms at the Theatre of Dreams may well close that particular avenue.

It is open to debate as to whether either of the players would be keen to play second fiddle.

Jones believes Erik ten Hag will now need to make a quick decision as to which direction to go in for next season.

“Obviously Jack Butland was there temporarily, and he’s moved on now too,” he added.

“So it depends where United now look for an actual backup goalkeeper and for someone who’s experienced that they know they can trust or if they look to groom someone for the next era to be the next Man United number one.”
