Stan Collymore has urged Manchester United to not make a “knee-jerk decision” on a transfer for Marcel Sabitzer, as the pundit hailed Erik ten Hag for changing the philosophy on jumping the gun on such deals.

United spent around £200million in the summer – Ten Hag’s first window at the club. He brought in some quality players and Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have been especially crucial.

Indeed, it seems the Dutch boss knows how to make a smart decision in the transfer market. As such, after a relatively big spend in the summer, he opted against splashing the cash in January.

Instead, the three players that joined the club – Wout Weghorst, Jack Butland and Sabitzer – were all on loan deals.

Weghorst and Sabitzer have impacted the side, both playing regularly since joining. The latter has been praised for his performances, particularly by Collymore for his role in United’s 3-0 win over Leicester City.

“He’s played a handful of games for United and he’s improving,” he told Caught Offside.

“I thought he had a good game against Leicester City and that was echoed by the fact he made 11 ball recoveries, which was more than any other player on the pitch, but I still think United should wait before they even start thinking about a permanent deal.

“Sabitzer will know that Bayern Munich are probably looking to sell him so doing well at United may be his last chance to impress at a top, top club.”

Bayern reportedly only want £18million for United to take him off their hands permanently. However, Collymore thinks they should wait and Ten Hag’s role in changing how things are done at the club means that’s likely.

“For that reason, I think United would prefer to see how he does for the remainder of the season before making any knee-jerk decisions on whether or not they want to keep him and that’s testimony to how much the club has changed recently because not too many seasons ago, we’d have probably seen them already trying to wrap a deal up.

“Now it’s a case of them being a lot more stable and having a long-term plan, so credit to Erik Ten Hag for implementing that change of philosophy so quickly.”

Indeed, Ten Hag has shown his wits during his time at United. And it certainly seems smart not to rush into a deal for Sabitzer.

When Eriksen is back fit, he might not get on the pitch too much. What’s more, United may be plotting moves for other midfielders in the summer.

As such, they could simply be throwing money away if they were to decide on snaring Sabitzer now.
