Manchester United appear close to announcing a new contract for goalkeeper David de Gea after he spoke positively about their renewal talks, with reports also claiming he has agreed to take a pay cut.

De Gea has spent the majority of his career at Old Trafford, having joined Man Utd from Atletico Madrid as a 20-year-old in summer 2011. He cost Man Utd around £19million, according to BBC Sport, and has been well worth that money.

The keeper has made 510 appearances for the Red Devils, achieving 177 clean sheets in that time. During De Gea’s spell with the club they have won the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League, EFL Cup and three Community Shields.

His current Man Utd contract is due to expire at the end of the season, which has led to rumours of a move elsewhere.

Atleti have reportedly been considering a move to take De Gea back to the Spanish capital.

Man Utd, meanwhile, have been looking at keepers who might be able to replace him. These include Portugal international Diogo Costa, Illan Meslier of Leeds and Brighton’s Robert Sanchez.

But there has now been a big update on De Gea’s future, with the 32-year-old looking set to remain at Man Utd.

According to The Telegraph, the shot-stopper is hopeful of finishing his career with Man Utd and has resultantly agreed to take a pay cut when signing a new contract. This means over the coming years he will earn less than the £375,000 a week he currently takes home.

David de Gea comments on Man Utd discussions

De Gea has also conducted an interview with Samuel Luckhurst, the chief Man Utd writer at the Manchester Evening News, in which he has broken his silence on the contract discussions.

“Yeah, I’m very relaxed,” he said. “Just focus on training, perform as best as I can. But, for sure, it [the contract] is going to end in a good way.”

It seems De Gea has effectively given the green light to sign a new deal at Man Utd, which will keep him there for the next few years.

Erik ten Hag initially had reservations about De Gea and whether he would be able to play out with his feet at the correct standard. This explains the transfer links with Costa, Meslier and Sanchez.

But Ten Hag and De Gea have found a compromise where the keeper does not have to play out from the back too much, but enough to please his manager. And the Spaniard has also impressed Ten Hag by managing clean sheets in Man Utd’s last three league matches.

De Gea pulled off some great saves to keep Bournemouth at bay on Tuesday, helping his team to run out 3-0 winners.

The new contract suggests De Gea will remain as Ten Hag’s number one for the next few seasons. But there is still the possibility of Man Utd bringing in a younger alternative in a couple of years, most likely Costa.

He would be able to learn from De Gea and eventually become his replacement, once he goes past his best.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has reacted to claims Man Utd could pull off a sensational move for a top former Arsenal man.
