Manchester United are close to accepting defeat over their chances of signing Frenkie de Jong after his agents made their stance absolutely clear.

The Barcelona midfielder is a major target for United under new manager Erik ten Hag. The Dutch pair worked so well together at Ajax, with Ten Hag sensing an exciting opportunity to reunite.

The two clubs overcame a big hurdle on Thursday by agreeing a transfer fee for the 25-year-old midfielder.

Indeed, it is not only Man Utd that want to push the De Jong transfer through. Barcelona bosses are keen to move their most saleable asset on to help ease their financial troubles.

But the big sticking point throughout the transfer saga has been the player’s stance. He has publicly insisted on more than one occasion that he feels happy at Barcelona.

And as talks have intensified on the personal terms front, Sport reports that they have taken a sour turn. United made their transfer fee breakthrough with a trip to Barcelona earlier this week.

CEO Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough led the talks. But on the player’s side, De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, reportedly told the United chiefs to ‘stop insisting’ and ‘wasting their time’.

The report adds that the stance came as an ‘unpleasant surprise’ for Arnold and Murtough.

They had hoped to convince De Jong over a move to Old Trafford. However, Sport says that ‘everything indicates’ Man Utd will not get their man.

De Jong transfer stance explained

Sport claims that De Jong and his wife’s connection with Barcelona is the main reason he wants to stay put.

He would be open to leaving the Camp Nou, but he has ‘flatly refused’ to move to United. As well as the geography of his move, the player feels he would be taking a step down by moving to United and the Premier League.

Indeed, Barcelona have Champions League football to look forward to next season. The Red Devils, though, are in the Europa League.

De Jong has therefore insisted that he will leave Barcelona if the right offer arrives, but a move to United is not in his thoughts.

United need to move on

The Old Trafford club have spent the best part of the summer transfer window so far trying to sign De Jong.

However, it looks as though no matter how hard they try, the player will not budge – at least not for them.

He would be an exciting addition to the Premier League with his best years ahead of him potentially working under Ten Hag.

But if De Jong is unwilling to make the move, United simply have to move on.

They have lost four midfielders over the summer, three to free agency, meaning new signings there are a massive priority.

With the Premier League season drawing nearer, the Red Devils do not have much time left to get those players in. And by the looks of it, they could be chasing De Jong for another month without success.
