Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Man Utd were “offered more than 15 players” in just one “crazy week” during the summer transfer window.

After it was announced that Erik ten Hag would be replacing Ralf Rangnick at Man Utd, a dramatic summer felt like an inevitability.

The Red Devils lived up to expectations in this sense, though large portions of their business was overshadowed by their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong and Cristiano Ronaldo looking to leave.

As another sporting Saturday gets under way the scale of football’s error becomes clear

United agreed a fee for De Jong, but he never looked to leave FC Barcelona during the summer.

Man Utd continued to target him for what felt like an eternity but they eventually made the wise decision to look at other targets.

Casemiro was the centre-midfielder they settled on and Man Utd will pay up to £60m to Real Madrid for him.

The Brazil international used to play with Ronaldo at Real Madrid and United will hope that their relationship will help the forward get his smile back.

Ronaldo spat his dummy out earlier this summer as he seemingly had no desire to play in the Europa League.

He looked to leave so he could get back to playing in the Champions League, but Ronaldo did not get his move.

The experienced attacker will now remain at United until January at the earliest. He returned to the starting eleven earlier this week as Ten Hag’s side were beaten 1-0 by Real Sociedad.

£84.8m summer signing Antony also started after he scored in his debut against Arsenal last weekend.

With the transfer window now closed, Romano has spoken on a “crazy week” for Man Utd between the 15th and 21st of August.

For context, this was the week following United’s heavy 4-0 loss against Brentford. On Monday 22nd, They bounced back to beat Liverpool 2-1.

Romano has revealed that there was “no panic from United” and they “waited” for Casemiro and Antony while being offered “more than 15 players”:

“Between the 15th and 21st of August was a crazy week for Manchester United. It was a difficult moment for them – Antony was not available and they had some issues in many negotiations,” Romano wrote for Caught Offside.

“So, they submitted offers for Adrien Rabiot and Marko Arnautovic – the two deals were absolutely on.

“But during the following week the Rabiot deal fell through due to salary demands, and the Arnautovic deal collapsed because the fans went absolutely crazy about that story.

“What happened next? Honestly, more than 15 players were offered to Man United that week. Memphis Depay on a free transfer was one, Leandro Paredes was discussed, Weston McKennie was offered as well.

“While the Antony deal was still in doubt, Yannick Carrasco was offered, and Christian Pulisic was discussed. At right-back, Sergino Dest and Thomas Meunier were also options.

“Still, there was no panic from United, they decided to wait and only go for top players. In the end, they got Casemiro and Antony – their patience paid off.

“They were calm in a difficult moment and for now it looks like it was the right approach.”
