Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has completed a season-long loan move to Sunderland.

The 20-year-old forward becomes Sunderland’s seventh senior signing of the summer, but the first for new boss Tony Mowbray. Diallo’s departure comes just 24 hours after United sealed the signing of Antony.

United will pay an initial £81.3m to Ajax for the Brazil winger, which will be the fourth most expensive signing in Premier League history. And his arrival has allowed Erik ten Hag to let Diallo move out on loan.
The winger joined United in January 2021 on a deal which will ultimately cost the Red Devils £37m. But the big outlay on the former Atalanta star has not yet paid off.

Diallo has showed glimpses of talent, but he has managed just 167 minutes of Premier League football. And last season’s interim boss Ralf Rangnick allowed the Ivory Coast international to join Rangers on loan.

But just three goals in 13 appearances from January saw Diallo return from Ibrox in the summer.

Anderlecht, Besiktas and Blackpool were all understood to be interested in Diallo, who remains under contract until 2025.

Diallo: I’ve never been to the Stadium of Light

Diallo told Sunderland’s website: “I feel good and very positive about this opportunity, so I’m happy to be here.

“It was a great experience to play with Manchester United, but I’m here for a new challenge and I want to try my best to bring a lot of success to the club.

“I feel good physically and I think this is the best team for me to progress and although I’ve never been to the Stadium of Light before, I know the supporters are great so I hope we can win many games together.”

United wished the youngster well and stated they will be watching his progress carefully.

“The winger will join up with new Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray. Amad will gain further experience in the Championship, continuing his progress in a new environment, while being closely monitored and supported by United staff,” read a United statement.

“Everybody would like to wish Amad the best of luck this term as we follow his progress at the Stadium of Light.”

Sunderland had earlier announced the capture of 19-year-old Paris St Germain midfielder Edouard Michut. That was soon to be followed by a permanent deal for Le Havre teenager Abdoullah Ba.
