Pep Guardiola has poured cold water on suggestions that Neymar was offered to Manchester City as part of an exciting swap deal this summer.

Speculation around Neymar’s future in the French capital has been rife, but the Brazilian will not be turning up at The Etihad. It would have been one of the transfer deals of the summer had Guardiola been asked about a swap for Bernardo Silva.

But the City boss has denied being approached about taking Neymar.

Le Parisien claimed Neymar was offered as part of a blockbuster swap deal featuring in-demand midfielder Silva.

The French outlet claimed PSG sought to offload Neymar to City in “recent weeks”.

The story, as told by the French source, then claim Guardiola declined. But the Spaniard has now put the record straight.

Guardiola said in a press conference, as cited by The Sun: “I’m sorry for the paper who did the story – but it’s not true. Their information is not right.

“Neymar is an incredible player and the info I have he’s an incredibly nice guy. But it’s not right.

“Every summer Manchester City are going to buy 150 players.”

It seems Guardiola is more than happy with the attacking additions of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez to a squad that blasted 99 goals last season.

Of course Raheem Sterling has left for Chelsea. His 17 goal contribution from 47 games last season will surely be hoovered up by the new forward pair though.

Neymar’s future has come into focus after the arrival of new coach Christophe Galtier.

Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi also warned his big stars “will have to assume their responsibilities even more than before” during an interview in June.

Guardiola admiration for Neymar

Neymar though is said to be keen to remain in Paris for a sixth season after his record-breaking £200m transfer from Barcelona in 2017.

Whether Guardiola would have taken Neymar had talk of the offer been true, only he knows. But the City boss has spoken very highly of the attacker previously.

In April 2021, ahead of City’s Champions League semi-final second leg with PSG, Guardiola said: “I remember watching clips of Neymar and thinking this is the king of Santos [Neymar’s first club in Brazil].

“The players had their mouths open.

“If Neymar had stayed at Barcelona, they would have won two or three Champions League more. Him, [Lionel] Messi and [Luis] Suarez were the best up front. He makes football a pleasure.

“I always believe with the quality of the players, there isn’t a defensive strategy to stop them. They are too good. They are incredible players, that’s why they are there.”
