A row between Pep Guardiola and Manchester City fans has escalated after the manager stepped up the war-of-words, insisting he will walk from the club if he does not have the love of the supporters.

The fracas began when Guardiola pleased for more fans to watch his team after the 6-3 win over Leipzig in the Champions League in which the Etihad stadium was far from full.

It remains to be seen if the supporters heed their manager’s call today as the champions play host to a Southampton today.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team have proved that they are apable of racking up the goals as they bulged the net eight times against Newport County in the League Cup last month. But City’s galacticos are an entirely different proposition than the League Two strugglers.

The Saints did a home draw against Manchester United in August and will surely take anything they can from this match.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Manchester City vs Southampton is scheduled for a 3pm BST kick-off at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester today.

Where to watch Manchester City vs Southampton

This match will not be broadcast live on TV in the UK.

Manchester City vs Southampton team news

With no fresh injury concerns after the 6-3 demolition of Leipzig, Guardiola has an almost full squad to choose from.

Kevin de Bruyne played 71 minutes on Wednesday and looked in complete control throughout. He was replaced by Phil Foden who was also making his return from injury. Both may get a run to help ease them back to full fitness.

Raheem Sterling could start and will need to impress as the England talisman has found himself on the periphery of Guardiola’s plans. The same could be said of Jesus who has dropped behind Ferran Torres in the pecking order.

Centre backs Aymeric Laporte and John Stones did not take part on Wednesday and their fitness will be monitored before Saturday’s kickoff.

Manchester City v Southampton prediction

It’s not hard to guess which way this one is going to go. One team has a claim to being the best in the world. Their second XI would win the league in almost every country in Europe.

Their opponents are industrious and determined, but have also yet to win a league match this season. Anything other than a comfortable home win would come as a surprise.

Manchester City 5-0 Southampton

Head to head (h2h) history and results

The last two fixtures between the clubs has seen City win 5-2 at home and 1-0 away, but in July 2020 the Saints pulled off a remarkable 1-0 victory after Che Adams’ 16th minute goal proved the difference at St Mary’s.

In 35 meetings between them City have won 20 with 7 going to Southampton. They last won away to Manchester City in 2004 back when Kevin Phillips hit a brace at Maine Road.
