A second-half blitz at Old Trafford saw Manchester United ease past Colchester United and book their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

After toiling in the first-half, United scored three times in 10 minutes in the second to seal victory, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial getting on the score sheet either side of a Ryan Jackson own goal.

United will face Manchester City, Aston Villa or Leicester in their semi-final.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a strong XI which included both Rashford and Martial from the start with David de Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Scott McTominay the only notable names rested. But United endured a frustrating first-half once again where they once again struggled to break down opposition defending from deep.

It took them just six minutes into the second-half to find the breakthrough however with Rashford providing another special moment. Picking the ball up out on the left flank, the England international cut inside and drove menacingly towards goal, skipping past two defenders looking for room to shoot. Finding it, he made no mistake with the finish, lashing into the roof of the net.

Mason Greenwood, who came off the bench to score United’s equaliser against Everton on Sunday, had another contribution to make. His superb cross would have surely teed up Rashford for his second, only for Jackson to divert past his own goalkeeper.

Rashford was involved in his side’s third, wonderfully picked out by Juan Mata’s lofted pass to cut back across goal for Martial to score a tap in.
