Manchester United's season hit a new low as Burnley sealed a fully-deserved 2-0 victory at Old Trafford to painfully expose the limitations of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's injury-hit squad.

United went into the game with the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea to just three points, but two fine goals from Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez earned a comfortable victory for Sean Dyche's Clarets.

Solskjaer's side badly missed the killer instinct of Marcus Rashford up front, and with United struggling to sign Bruno Fernandes and short-term options for signing on a striker beginning to dry up, the loss emphasised the Red Devils' shortcomings all over the pitch.

While the defeat will leave Solskjaer under increasing pressure in the dugout, the imbalance within the squad and years of haphazard spending in the transfer market were laid bare as the atmosphere at Old Trafford - with empty seats aplenty - threatened to turn toxic as the hosts ran out of ideas.
