David Moyes has hit back at Rio Ferdinand’s criticism and defended his stint in charge of Manchester United.

Ferdinand accused Moyes of wasting the chance to build on Sir Alex Fergsuon’s legacy after replacing his fellow Scot in 2013.

The 56-year-old did not last even a season at Old Trafford, but insists he was a “good fit” for the club after joining from Everton.

“I look at it in many ways,” Moyes told BBC Radio Scotland. “They’re very experienced players, they will have seen how good managers work so they’ll see it differently – but I had to put my stamp on Manchester United.

“The big thing about Manchester United... Manchester United was never going to be a revolution, it was evolution and it was going to take time and it would be a slow change.

“It couldn’t be a quick change because they had players that were getting a bit older and they were going to have to be changed around.

“When you look back I think people would say it was quite obvious it was going to take a bit of time for Manchester United to change things around.”

Moyes was sacked by United in April 2014 just 11 months after being announced as Ferguson’s successor.

United have not won the Premier League since Ferguson bowed out from management after winning the 2012/13 title.
