International breaks have rarely been kind to Manchester United with injuries and a loss of momentum occurring whenever players go away to their national teams. The latest one saw Phil Jones return to Carrington from the England camp with thigh issues leaving Mourinho visibly distraught. The Red Devils have already dropped eight points behind Manchester City and need to pick up form to stay in the title race, while Newcastle have won only once in their last five but should put up a solid fight against Mourinho’s men.

Key battles

Matic vs Shelvey

Jonjo Shelvey will need to be contained if Manchester United are to stop Newcastle from creating any chances, and Nemanja Matic should be the the man tasked with doing that. The Serbian midfielder has made an immediate impact on United’s style of play since his transfer from rivals Chelsea, and should be able to contain the quarterback style of Jonjo Shelvey.

Lukaku vs Lascelles

Romelu Lukaku has racked up seven goals and three assists for United so far in the Premier League this season but has seen his form taper off since Paul Pogba’s injury. He broke his run of seven games without a goal after netting three times in two games for Belgium over the international break and will have his tail up looking to do the same for his club as well. Jamaal Lascelles is a doubt for the fixture but will have his hands full in case if he does end up proving his fitness and slotting into the Newcastle back four.

Who to pick

Romelu Lukaku used the international break to become Belgium’s all-time leading top scorer and could use that as a platform to end his Premier League drought. The striker scored twice in the 3-3 draw against Mexico before netting the only goal in the victory over Japan four days later. Even though the forward hasn’t scored in seven games across all competitions for United, expect him to take any chances that come his way at Old Trafford.

Who to avoid

Ander Herrera might not find a spot in the Manchester United starting eleven now that Marouane Fellaini has returned to the fold after recovering from his injury. The Basque midfielder is expected to drop to the bench with Mourinho likely to select Matic and Fellaini in a 4-2-3-1 for the Magpies visit to Old Trafford.

Who to watch

With Mikel Merino likely to miss out through injury again, expect Jonjo Shelvey to pick up the pieces in Newcastle’s midfield. The Magpies might be forced to sit deep against Manchester United at Old Trafford, but the midfielder’s willingness to pick out long passes might lead to a game changing moment. If Newcastle are to get anything from their visit to Old Trafford, we believe that Shelvey will have a major role to play.
