Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has said that he would be happy to keep Marcus Rashford at the club, despite his bombshell interview, but some The Manchester Evening News readers in our comments section are seeing echoes of Cristiano Ronaldo's exit from Old Trafford.

Rashford said that he's ready for a "new challenge" during an interview with journalist Henry Winter this week. Speculation about his future at the club began when he was dropped for the important Manchester derby last week - which United won without his help.

The United head coach hopes that Rashford can find his place at the club, yet again, saying: "We have here a new challenge. It's a tough one, for me it's the biggest challenge in football because we are in a difficult situation and I already said this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. This is a really new challenge and the biggest one. I really hope all my players are ready for this new challenge."

The end of Ronaldo's second coming at United in 2022 was preceded by a interview with Piers Morgan, attacking employees and ex-employees at the club. Rashford's interview was much more restrained and introspective, but it hasn't stopped people from making the comparison.

Reader Anthonys-1-man-army writes: "A true '100 per cent behind the team and manager' player would have knuckled down, kept quiet and pushed harder. Amorim has pushed him into a corner and, while not doing a Ronaldo interview, he's halfway there. Using the media to his advantage when he wants it and complaining when he isn't happy with what he reads. This is all unless it's being read wrong and he means a new challenge with United."

Commenter Amil says: "The new challenge could be adjusting his style of play to suit the new system. MR might need to explain his statement, lest misinterpretations turn it to something else. Yes, he's off-form now, but he should find his motivation from within, just like CR7."

Footballisknowledge writes: "I am with Marcus on that one, he has offered so much to the club through a very difficult period. There were seasons in which he carried us hard under all the previous managers (LVG, Ole, Jose, Erik). If he wants to leave I understand, he was inside a team which underperformed for so many years, of course that has mental toll on you. I wish him the best in whatever he chooses to do in his life. Always red!"

Madridred says: "You can't have this level of drama around the club and expect to succeed. Each year the club is further and further from the reign of SAF - and it gets even more dramatic. This club needs a reset from ownership down, and if I could get rid of some of the fans I would. The club has devalued Rashford by handling this issue in the press as they have, and they are not going to get anything near his value in the market. It is best to buy out his contract and let him leave. They just keep making the same mistakes over and over again."
