Manchester United to hold further contract talks with Europa League match-winner Mason Greenwood

Manchester United are expected to hold further contract talks with Mason Greenwood after the youngster’s match-winning Europa League display against Astana.

Greenwood scored the only goal of the game as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side made a winning start in Group L on Thursday night.

United struggled to break down the Kazakhstani champions until the 17-year-old scored his first senior goal deep into the second half.

Greenwood signed his first professional contract at United last year but is in line to renew terms before his 18th birthday on 1 October.

The England Under-21 international can expect a hefty pay rise to around £25,000-a-week, reflecting his growing status at Old Trafford and within Solskjaer’s squad.

“We're always in talks with the boys,” the United manager said in his post-match press conference after Greenwood’s match-winning turn. “Mason's one we want to keep with us.”

Has Greenwood proved Solskjaer right on biggest United decision?

“He is learning every single day in training, training with better players and the more match time he gets the better tempo and today was a good introduction for him.”

Solskjaer is keen to give first-team opportunities to United’s academy players, with three teenagers starting against Astana on Thursday night.

Greenwood, who started on the right-hand side of United’s attack, was joined by 18-year-old winger Tahith Chong and 19-year-old playmaker Angel Gomes.
