‘Hello, Mr Van Gaal? it’s Manchester United here.’ A missed call on the Netherlands manager’s phone was spotted by a Dutch journalist, prompting Cody Gakpo theories.

De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen recovered Van Gaal’s phone in a hotel toilet in Doha, pressed the power button to find out who had misplaced it and was greeted by a lock screen image of Van Gaal with his wife Truus.

But the phone also displayed two missed calls with a caller ID which said ‘Manchester United’. Not Erik ten Hag or Richard Arnold, but the football club ‘Manchester United’.

Mirror report that the phone was immediately returned to the Netherlands boss, who was less than impressed, but also suggest that the call was in relation to Gakpo.

It’s claimed Manchester United called to seek permission to hold talks with the PSV Eindhoven star, which they are unlikely to be granted (if indeed it’s not absolute bollocks) given the Netherlands are preparing for their quarter-final clash against Argentina on Friday night.

Gakpo came close to joining Leeds in the summer for £40m but is now tipped to move to Man United, who will likely now have to pay far more than that original asking price after the forward scored in each of the Netherlands’ group games in Qatar.

Earlier this week, the player himself admitted that while United hadn’t made any formal contact, he would be interested if they did.

He told Dutch newspaper NRC: “I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Should I go there? Now I wait everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.”

Ten Hag is looking to add to his forward options in January after the club announced it had ripped up Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract in the wake of the Portugal international’s bombshell interview with Piers Morgan.
