Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba will eventually prove cheap at £89million, predicts Jose Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes his £89m record signing Paul Pogba will look like a bargain after what he predicts will be a record splurge of spending from Europe’s top clubs next summer.

Mourinho and United sanction the record breaking £89m deal for Pogba last summer, with the Frenchman’s price tag after his move from Juventus piling pressure on him to prove his worth on a weekly basis.

Yet Mourinho suggests his value will look cost-effective, as he suggests transfer fees will continue to spiral upwards.

“I think in a couple of years you will realise he (Pogba) was cheap,” stated the United boss.

“I have to admit that not many clubs have this vision of anticipation of what can happen in the near future.

“A few years ago £25m was a phenomenal player. Now £25 m is not even a player, is only a prospect of a player .

“I’m pretty sure that next summer some players with only half his quality probably will cost the same money or more than Pogba did.

“So I think next summer can bring a few surprises at this level and probably Paul will lose this status as the world’s most expensive player, which will be a good thing.”

Mourinho went on to predict that Pogba’s reign as the most expensive player in world football will come to an end next summer and he can’t wait for the burden to be lifted from the Frenchman’s shoulders.

Ahead of United’s FA Cup clash against Blackburn on Sunday, Mourinho has poured praise on Pogba’s attitude as he has come to terms with his tag as the world’s costliest footballer.

“I think the scrutiny on him is hard, is difficult,” added the United boss. “When he plays very, very well – which he does many, many times – people think it’s normal.

“Yet when he has a game when he is not so happy and he doesn’t perform so well you guys, pundits and even supporters go strong on him, but that’s the price of being who he is and is also the price of his price – his transfer fee.

“So I am waiting for that moment to release him from the scrutiny. Even so I am really happy with his football and his happiness to play football because the most important thing for him is not to lose that happiness.

“I can see his influence on the team, very much so. Of course we can all see when he does great things – I mean, he has hit the woodwork eight times this season.

“Imagine the eight posts (ending up as goals) and it would be an amazing record so, you know, step by step – still very, very young. But he can be fantastic.”
