Manchester United show Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faith with new Mike Phelan contract
Manchester United appear to have offered their latest backing to under-fire manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by handing a new contract to his assistant Mike Phelan.
The Red Devils announced on Monday evening that Phelan had put pen to paper on an extension that will keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2024.
The 59-year-old is a key member of Solskjaer’s coaching setup and first returned to the club when the Norwegian was appointed caretaker manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December 2018.
A former midfielder who made 146 appearances for the club between 1989-94, Phelan had previously served as United’s first-team coach under Sir Alex Ferguson before eventually being promoted to assistant in 2008, leaving following the short-lived appointment of David Moyes in 2013.
He then had coaching and caretaker spells at Norwich and Hull, lasting less than three months as the Tigers’ permanent boss before being sacked in January 2017.
Phelan also spent time as the sporting director at Australian club Central Coast Mariners before being brought back to United by Solskjaer, reassuming first-team coaching duties before being promoted back to permanent assistant in May 2019 on a three-year contract.
His new deal will be seen as both a boost and show of faith at an important time for Solskjaer, whose position has once again been subject to speculation following a disappointing run of form that has seen United win just two of their last six games across all competitions, being dumped out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham and also losing at home to Aston Villa as well as drawing with Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
United sit fourth heading into the second internatobal break of the 2021/22 campaign, two points adrift of leaders Chelsea ahead of a difficult run of fixtures against Leicester, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City, as well as a pair of Champions Leaague meetings with Serie A side Atalanta.
