Manchester United complete £12.9m Tyrell Malacia deal: 'I will leave everything on the pitch'

Erik ten Hag has completed his first signing as Manchester United manager with Tyrell Malacia arriving from Feyenoord in a £12.9 million deal.

The Netherlands left back has signed a four year contract to June 2026 with the option of another 12 months.

United have agreed to pay an initial fee of £12.9m with a further £1.7m payable in add ons.

United made a late move for Malacia to steal the 22-year-old from under the noses of French club Lyon, who had been confident of signing him.

Malacia is expected to provide competition at left back for Luke Shaw although it remains to be seen what his arrival means for Alex Telles. The move for the Dutchman comes despite United’s greater need in the full back position coming on the opposite side at right back, with the club willing to listen to offers for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot still to convince in the Premier League.

“It’s an incredible feeling to have joined Manchester United,” Malacia said. “This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new team-mates and a tremendous manager leading us. I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players.

“Whilst I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt.

“I’ll always be thankful to Feyenoord for all they have given to me and my family. None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for them. Now I’m ready to focus on the future with United, and help my new club achieve success.”

John Murtough, United’s football director, believes Malacia has a bright future ahead of him.

“Tyrell is an exciting, dynamic young footballer with excellent experience for his age, including five seasons in the Eredivisie, a European final and full international honours for the Netherlands,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing him continue to develop under the guidance of Erik ten Hag and his coaching team in the years ahead. Everyone at Manchester United welcomes Tyrell to the club.”

Ten Hag hopes Malacia will be the first of up to five signings this summer as the Dutchman bids to reshape United’s squad during a critical summer for the club.

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen has verbally agreed to join United on a free transfer subject to the successful completion of a medical. Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at the Euros last summer, is due to sign a three-year contract with United after picking them over Brentford, where he impressed on loan during the final months of last season.

United remain in talks with Barcelona over Ten Hag’s priority target Frenkie de Jong but time is running out to complete the deal for the Netherlands midfielder before Ten Hag and his squad are due to fly to Bangkok on Friday afternoon for the start of their pre-season tour.

United are also unsure whether Cristiano Ronaldo - who has asked to leave Old Trafford - will be on the plane after the Portugal forward was given permission by the club to take an extended break due to “family reasons”.

Ronaldo had originally been due to report back for pre-season on Monday but he is currently in Portugal and was not present at Carrington on Tuesday either.

Ten Hag will be concerned about the situation overshadowing his pre-season preparations but the manager is still unclear at this stage if Ronaldo will come back to Manchester this week and fly out with the rest of the squad. The Portuguese star wants to compete in the Champions League and is eyeing a move away, with Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Napoli among the clubs who have been linked with the five-time World Player of the Year.

United have insisted they do not intend to sell Ronaldo and it is unclear whether potential suitors could afford the £775,000 a week he earns at Old Trafford.

United have also held talks with Ajax over the Brazil forward Antony and Argentina centre-half Lisandro Martinez, who is also wanted by Arsenal.
