Manchester United: Three potential free agents that the Red Devils could be interested in during the summer

With eight games remaining of the Premier League season, Jose Mourinho should have a clear idea by now of the strengths and weaknesses inside the current Manchester United squad. Given that he is always on the move when it comes to buying and selling players, he will surely be considering a couple of signings during the summer transfer window.

Instead of splashing money out aggressively, could he decide to perhaps sign a few players on a free transfer?

According to transfermarkt.co.uk; there are quite a lot of well-known individuals in Europe that will be available to sign on a free transfer and the Red Devils have already been linked with a couple of names already.

Here are three names that Manchester United could potentially go for once the season is over…

Pepe (centre-back) – Real Madrid

It’s quite a surprise that Pepe has not been given a new contract by Real Madrid, after completing a fantastic year of football in 2016, from winning the Champions League with the club to playing a key role in defence towards Portugal’s successful campaign within the European Championships. On top of that, he does not look to be declining anytime soon but is struggling to receive regular game time under Zinedine Zidane.

If his ten-year spell at Los Blancos does come to an end, Mourinho and Manchester United should be all over this possible transfer. Despite having the third best defence in the league, the Red Devils have had some setbacks with the development of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, both who are currently out with a long-term injury and are deemed as the weak link in the backline which would allow an experienced player like Pepe to come in as a shrewd signing.

Sead Kolasinac (left-back) – Schalke 04

If you have been taking serious note of all the transfer rumours within the past few months, you’ll definitely have heard a lot about Sead Kolasinac, who is a left-back for Schalke 04 and is wanted by many of the big teams in Europe. The 23-year-old is seen as a muscular and physical player, having the tendency to go forward to help the attackers and is also comfortable when being utilised as a cover in other positions.

Seeing that the future of Luke Shaw at Old Trafford is not clear at this moment of time, it’s important for Manchester United to scout a few potential left-back targets before the campaign is over. Since the Bosnian international is regarded as a risk-free potential signing, the Red Devils would not be in any sort of trouble if he does not succeed at the club as a first-team player he can also be seen as a back-up option to Luke Shaw.

Rachid Ghezzal (right-winger) – Lyon

Known for his creativity and intelligence within the final third of the pitch, Rachid Ghezzal is gaining the interest of a few Premier League sides including Manchester United. The Algerian has been in and out of the starting line-up for Lyon this campaign, however, he played big role for the side in the previous season as he bagged eight goals and eight assists in the league. Also, he has the ability to play on both flanks and can prove to be deadly in front of goal.

As Mourinho is finding it difficult to get his wingers to perform at a consistent level week in and out, it would not be a surprise to see an individual like Ghezzal at Old Trafford next season. The likes of Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have only scored six league goals in total, and will have to do a lot of work during the final few games of the season to show why they deserve to remain in the starting line-up. Otherwise, either one of the wingers will be indefinitely benched ahead of the next campaign and it could leave a space for someone like Ghezzal to fill in.
