Manchester United will be desperate for victory when they host Atalanta in the Champions League tonight.

Despite an aggressive summer recruitment drive that saw Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo join a team who finished second in the Premier League last season, the new faces have not yielded the kind of results many would have expected. Of course, United boast the kind of individual talent to cause any team a problem on their day, although therein lies the issue.

Indeed, while there are big names in pretty much every position, there appears to be somewhat of a reliance on moments of brilliance in light of a convincing overall structure.

That particular criticism of the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era could not offer more of a juxtaposition when compared to their European opposition. One of few success stories of Italian football in recent years, Atalanta are a thoroughly entertaining side capable of blowing teams apart under Gian Piero Gasperini and arrive in Manchester with some recent Champions League pedigree.

Narrowly beaten quarter-finalists in 2020, they lead the way in Group F and could extend their one-point advantage to a healthy four with a win over an out-of-sorts United.
