Manchester United vs Chelsea LIVE!

Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out Marcos Alonso's opener as United drew 1-1 with Chelsea at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Thursday.

After Chelsea had failed to make the most of a series of chances in the first half, they took the lead when Reece James' cross was flicked on by Kai Havertz and Alonso powered a left-foot volley into the corner.

Within two minutes, though, United were back on level terms when Nemanja Matic scooped the ball over the top and Ronaldo took one touch before slotting past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea went close to a winner in the 79th when Mason Mount set up James with a clever, backheeled lay-off but the full-back's left foot curler struck the post.

The result leaves Chelsea in third place on 66 points while United are in sixth spot with 55, five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal having played two games more.

Match report

22:33 , Marc Mayo

Thank you for joining us tonight, we will be back on the weekend for more big Premier League matches.

Recap Manchester United’s draw against Chelsea with our match report.

Where would United be without this bloke?

22:23 , Marc Mayo

Next up: Ralf Rangnick

22:17 , Marc Mayo

“In the second half we showed a good reaction, even more so after the goal. It was good to have an early reply to that goal, a great assist and good finish. We pushed Elanga more like a wing-back and in the last 15 minutes played with a back five, which gave us more control.

“It was a lucky draw but we earned it.

“I speak tonight about United and our game, I can also say I will definitely continue next season in my consultancy role. We have agreed on the content and time of my role and so far Erik and I haven’t spoken but hopefully we will in the future. I’m more than happy and willing to help. It would leave space for another job but that’s what we agreed last year.”

Reece James offers his take on the game

22:12 , Marc Mayo

“We came here to win, had our chances in the first half and didn’t take them. United are a great side and took two points from us today which we’re obviously disappointed with.

“I can definitely do more when I’m higher up, I’m a bit limited at centre-back, but I’m happy to help the team. I probably should have scored but life goes on and we have another game soon. It’s a tough one, it could have been worse so we have to take it - put it behind us and move on.”

Thomas Tuchel gives his reaction

22:07 , Marc Mayo

“It’s on us to learn from it and you need to be clinical to get the reward, and once you have it be fully alert in the next minutes and it so often happens the other team gets a chance right after the goal. We were very very good today but we could not take our chance.

“We created so many chances to get the lead and then the opponent gets one chance and scores.

“I think [Havertz and Werner] did not reach their peak performance today but that’s it, we don’t point the finger and we had plenty of chances to score today.”

A good night for the Blues elsewhere

22:04 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea Women have gone four points clear atop the WSL with a 2-1 win vs Spurs.

Nemanja Matic gives his reaction

21:45 , Marc Mayo

“Maybe they had more opportunities than us but 1-1 was a fair result. We expected a tough game but I think we did much better than in the last couple of weeks, so a bit of improvement.

“We didn’t give up, we showed good character. We equalised after a couple of minutes so it was a good reaction.

“I try to enjoy it of course, it was a pleasure and honour to play at Old Trafford for five years. I said before I would do my best to help my team, three more games to play and United together with Chelsea will stay forever in my heart.”

Two points dropped for the Blues

21:41 , Marc Mayo

Full time!

21:34 , Marc Mayo

It’s a 1-1 draw tonight at Old Trafford after Cristiano Ronaldo’s strike quickly followed Marcos Alonso’s opener for Chelsea.

21:33 , Marc Mayo

90+3 mins: A late corner for United... It enters the melee and bounces up for Mendy to snatch!

21:31 , Marc Mayo

90+1 mins: Alonso crosses on the break but it’s way over Lukaku. Elanga comes off for young debutant Garnacho.

21:31 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Jorginho gives away a foul down the left with a trip on Fernandes. Three minutes goes up on the board as Elanga whacks the second ball into the crowd and Chelsea clear.

James Robson at Old Trafford

21:29 , Marc Mayo

Final moments here and it doesn’t feel like a winner is coming. Chelsea will rue the chances they missed in the first half. The second half has been much more even.

21:27 , Marc Mayo

86 mins: The first booking of the night goes to Rudiger after he manhandled Mata out of a counter opening for the Spaniard.

The home fans then want another as he throws up a high foot to clear a ball, catching Elanga with his follow through. Mike Dean signals for a throw as the physio comes on.

21:25 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: Nothing comes of a United free-kick into the box before Lukaku creates a counter, and quickly loses a battle to surrender possession. It has not been much of a super-sub outing from the Belgian so far.

21:22 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: First Alonso and then James take swipes at goal, meeting decent deflections both times. Rudiger then flies in from the corner and nods well wide.

Chelsea are just upping their tempo here... Loftus-Cheek replaces Kante.

21:20 , Marc Mayo

79 mins: POST!

United lose the ball by their box and Mount tees up James, for a left-footed whack which clips the far post...

21:19 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Ronaldo is offside as he pelts a shot at Mendy, which is well saved. Rangnick turns to his bench with Jones and Mata on for Matic and Rashford.

James Robson at Old Trafford

21:17 , Marc Mayo

Tuchel is giving Lukaku specific instructions on the touchline. Let’s see if it works.

The Belgian was booed by United fans when he came on. He’d love to silence them with a winner.

21:16 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: A break in play after Fernandes fell on Jorginho, creating a bit of an awkward twist for the Italian. The physios are on but he should be able to carry on.

21:14 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: A lovely move down the left this time from Chelsea leads to Pulisic cutting a ball back from the byline, yet Lukaku had darted towards the goalline and Mount was too slow to get in the middle. Chance gone.

21:11 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: Lukaku and Pulisic are summoned by Tuchel, ending a bad night for Havertz and a quiet one for Werner.

A few boos for the ex-United man...

James Robson at Old Trafford

21:08 , Marc Mayo

This game has livened up. First Alonso shows Havertz how it’s done with a sweet finish. Then Ronaldo sends another reminder of his timeless class with an absolutely wonderful strike.

Chelsea will be wondering how this is level. But with Ronaldo on the pitch, anything is possible.

21:08 , Marc Mayo

67 mins: A bit of a nervy moment for Matic after he put a foot on James having put the ball out for a corner. A bit of a kerfuffle between the pair as they tumble down the hill but VAR is happy to play on - it was hardly a stamp if anything at all.

21:06 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: There has been no massive momentum surge for United since the goal as Chelsea settle back into their rhythm.

That was, however, Ronaldo’s first ever league goal against the Blues.

21:04 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: What a couple of minutes..!

First, Chelsea utilise the right wing once again to cross for Alonso, completely free as he arrives into the box to slam home a volley.

Then the Blues are sloppy in their own half and Ronaldo is played in, before firing past Mendy. As you were!

GGOOOOAALLLL! Man United 1-1 Chelsea | Cristiano Ronaldo

21:02 , Marc Mayo

GOOOAAALLLL! Man United 0-1 Chelsea | Marcos Alonso

21:00 , Marc Mayo

James Robson at Old Trafford

20:56 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea have so much more quality than United, but this has been better from the home side in the second half. Still, no surprise that it’s Chelsea who come closest to scoring again - Mount’s cross begging to be converted by Werner.

You wonder how long before Tuchel makes a change up front. Lukaku to come on and get a winner perhaps?

20:55 , Marc Mayo

55 mins: A chance to load the box for United after Azpilicueta commits an awkward handball.

McTominay floats it into touch. If that doesn’t just about sum it up!

20:54 , Marc Mayo

53 mins: CHANCE!

Telles rushes out of defence to get a toe on the ball and it actually opens up space for Chelsea in behind, Mount racing free and launching a great ball across the face of the goal.

It beats De Gea, and Werner. Just.

20:49 , Marc Mayo

48 mins: United look a threat from a set play before Chelsea produce their best breakaway of the night...

Havertz has Werner to the right and Kante more free down his left, he goes for the Frenchman but it is a weak pass and the ball is snaffled up. Poor again from the striker.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

20:47 , Marc Mayo

46 mins: It’s a case of start as you mean to go on for Chelsea with an attack down the right finding Mount, who flashes a snapshot wide of the near-post.

Elanga has gone to the left flank, taking Rashford off tracking duties for the dangerous James.

Back underway!

20:45 , Marc Mayo

The second-half begins with no changes for either side. Who can find a breakthrough?

Stats check

20:35 , Marc Mayo

It’s all going the way of the Blues, bar the goals column.

They lead 11 shots to three, with five shots on target to one. United have enjoyed only 35 per cent of possession.

Two pictures to sum up this half...

20:32 , Marc Mayo

20:30 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: And that is the break!

If Chelsea could finish this game would be over...

20:29 , Marc Mayo

43 mins: A minor worry for Chelsea with Mount hobbling although it looks like something he will run off.

James Robson at Old Trafford

20:28 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea have had 63 percent possession so far. This is as dominant a performance away from home as you could want to see. Yet the scores are level - and that is the concern for Tuchel.

20:26 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: Mendy flaps at a kick clear and Rashford is there to take advantage, before Alonso dives in to win it back quickly.

Still, United are on the front foot and Fernandes is teed up in the D but opts to roll in Ronaldo rather than shoot on his weaker foot. The chance goes and, in any case, the flag was up.

20:24 , Marc Mayo

39 mins: Rudiger tries to mimic his stunner against Brentford with a 40-yard piledriver that flies over the crossbar - although not too far over.

Gary Neville ponders if he was just “bored” as the camera shows Brian Robson and Sir Alex Ferguson in the stands. A different time for this club...

20:21 , Marc Mayo

35 mins: Havertz denied again!

A sumptuous cross from James on the right meets the striker’s head, but yet again it’s too close to the goalkeeper and De Gea parries clear.

20:20 , Marc Mayo

34 mins: James enjoying so much freedom he can bring the ball over to the left flank and ping a pass out wide before trotting back to his flank. This has got a real training session vibe as Chelsea cruise in possession.

James Robson at Old Trafford

20:16 , Marc Mayo

Tuchel has been getting increasing frustrated by Chelsea’s finishing. They have been carving United open, but are still to make the most of their chances.

He was livid with Havertz moments ago after failing to beat De Gea when one-on-one.

(Getty Images)

20:15 , Marc Mayo

“Your city is blue, just like London, your city is blue,” sing the Chelsea fans. The home team faithful responds with “We want Glazers out”.

Chelsea on top on the pitch, and in the stands when it comes to volume.

20:13 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: SAVE!

Havertz has to score... Kante strolls into the final third and releases the German one on one, yet he again goes for accuracy and hits the goalkeeper’s shoulder!

Rudiger slices over from the corner.

20:12 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Chance!

Just after that Ronaldo flop, Kante rushes away on the counter and Havertz beats Telles for pace. Rather than cross, with no player clear to be fair, he side-foots a shot into the side netting at the near post.

Again, that clinical incision in the box is lacking for Chelsea.

20:11 , Marc Mayo

25 mins: A short corner routine from Mount looks good to meet Alonso on the penalty spot but just lacks the accuracy required for that sort of pass into the box.

Down the other end, Ronaldo goes down in the box too easily under pressure.

20:08 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: It’s just the final ball that Chelsea are lacking... Mount breaks in down the right channel and sends in a low cross which De Gea can pick off before Havertz has a tap in.

One cannot help but feel if Chelsea really needed a goal soon, they could get one.

20:06 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: A chance for the hosts to sit on the ball for a moment and build something themselves, with a renewed crowd as the 17-minute protest against the Glazers comes to an end.

20:03 , Marc Mayo

17 mins: Chelsea fans shout “shoot” every time Rudiger picks up the ball from range and Chelsea do well to keep a move running despite the lack of a final ball.

United break out momentarily to a huge roar from the Stretford End, yet it comes to nothing and the Blues camp themselves on the 18-yard line before Kante whips a shot into De Gea’s midriff.

James Robson at Old Trafford

20:00 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea have bossed the opening stages and look generally sharper than United in every department. De Gea has already been called into action twice - and United bodies have had to throw themselves in front of other chances for the visitors.

United have come into a bit more in the past few minutes.

19:59 , Marc Mayo

13 mins: Ronaldo attempts the spectacular after Matic recycles a corner into the box, but shins a bicycle kick into the stand.

It has been a bit better from the hosts in recent moments, Ronaldo again trying his luck in an audacious attempt from 35 yards which meets a stout block.

19:56 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: United enjoy their first chance with a Fernandes header straight at Mendy, before Chelsea come back with a Rudiger cross into Havertz that the German cannot bring down.

A few more home fans in the crowd now than at kick-off following that protest.

(AFP via Getty Images)

19:54 , Marc Mayo

9 mins: Gary Neville on commentary lamenting “red mannequins” as Chelsea come forward again, James firing a shot into a defender. The visitors are finding it far too easy to get space and venture forward out wide.

19:51 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: Werner pops up in the box and spins for a snapshot, which is also on target but right at De Gea.

19:50 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: There is James in his natural habitat, 20 yards out and just inside from the right flank. He winds up a shot that stings De Gea’s palms, before being cleared.

United are yet to get going.

James Robson at Old Trafford

19:49 , Marc Mayo

James has started at wing-back, which suggests Tuchel believes that is an area he can hurt United - or perhaps make Telles think twice about charging forward himself.

19:48 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: Chelsea with the early pressure and look happy to sit on the ball just inside the United half, the Red Devils backed by a fairly sparse crowd tonight amid a fan protest.

If Manchester United were looking for the Thomas Tuchel effect, it did not work, writes James Robson...

Chelsea’s manager was on their wanted list, both before and after he took up his role at Stamford Bridge — and had he shown any indication he would be willing to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, then he would have been considered a serious rival to Erik ten Hag for the job.

Thomas Tuchel on Antonio Rudiger starting tonight

19:29 , Marc Mayo

“I have no reason to doubt him, he was excellent from day one so why start doubting? I am curious as the situation has changed now but I think for himself he has cleared his personal situation, he knows what’s going on. So this should give him peace of mind to perform on the level he demands of himself.”

Tactical preview

19:24 , Marc Mayo

Ralf Rangnick’s United continued their miserable campaign with back-to-back comprehensive defeats by Liverpool and Arsenal, while a Blues team led by the German’s former protege Thomas Tuchel have gone off the boil since their agonising Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid, leaving it late to see off West Ham in a London derby on Sunday.

Gary Neville on Erik ten Hag’s arrival

19:19 , Marc Mayo

“I think there’s going to be a massive, massive change. Five or six are out of contract but I can see even more being let go in a sort of brutal transition.”

Here come the Blues!

19:13 , Marc Mayo

Roy Keane discusses Erik ten Hag appointment

19:08 , Marc Mayo

“He’s got to get a group of players that will give everything for the cause, that will be hard to beat. Hopefully have a style of play that entertains the fans, but it’s a rebuilding job.

“He’s fortunate coming in in the summer with five or six players on big contracts already leaving - that will help. I think every United manager will get backing, he will get some money to spend but it’s about getting the right players and right characters into the club - what we’ve seen from this group of players that last few months has not been good enough.”

Ralf Rangnick explains his selection

19:03 , Marc Mayo

“I hope [it will be a big night for Marcus Rashford]. He has been very good in training and I very much hope for himself and the team that he can transform that onto the pitch tonight.

“We have four academy boys on the bench, they’ve been training us with for a couple of weeks and it’s a great experience for them. It’s possible some of them might get their first appearance tonight.”

18:57 , Marc Mayo

Reece James and Antonio Rudiger return for Chelsea tonight in their only two changes, leading to Trevoh Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek dropping to the bench.

That means there is no place for Christian Pulisic despite his matchwinner against West Ham on the weekend.

18:55 , Marc Mayo

Marcus Rashford comes in for the ill Jadon Sancho in the only change for United.

The Red Devils are without six first-teamers tonight but there is still no place in the squad for Jesse Lingard, with Shola Shoretire among the youngsters called up to the bench.

Chelsea and United set for transfer battle

18:38 , Marc Mayo

Manchester United know this summer could be their best chance to move for Declan Rice, with their rivals for the West Ham midfielder prioritising other positions.

Chelsea and Manchester City are also huge admirers of the England international, but Thomas Tuchel needs to sign two top-class centre-backs to replace departing pair Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, while Erling Haaland is on his way to the Etihad Stadium.

United have a long-term interest in Rice, but West Ham’s valuation of £150million has already got them looking at alternatives.
