Manchester United vs Liverpool: match postponed after mass anti-Glazers protest

Manchester United's match against Liverpool has been postponed after supporters protesting the ownership of the Glazer family broke into the ground and forced their way on to the pitch.

The kick-off, originally scheduled for 4.30pm, was delayed but an announcement by the club at 5.35pm confirmed that it had been called off after discussions with the police 'due to safety and security considerations around the protest'.

Neither team made it to the ground. Manchester United players, due to leave the Lowry, were still there at 5.45 pm while Liverpool were also being held back on security grounds.

A decision on when the match will now take place will be taken by the Premier League and the two clubs.

'Disgraceful Manchester United fans and negligent, embarrassing club brought shame on the game'

United were forewarned of the anti-Glazer protest but instead club brought more embarrassment with its failure to stop security breach, says our Chief Football Correspondent who was at Old Trafford today.

It was another sad Sunday for Manchester United. Two weeks to the day that the plans for a badly thought out, badly organised and just plain bad European Super League were announced the club scored another damaging own goal.

Allowing protesting fans to not only breach security but get into the stadium and onto the pitch was shocking - and not least because United and Greater Manchester Police were forewarned as to the scale of the anti-Glazer protest. It was announced and planned for more than a week ago and even commented on by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. So everyone should have been aware that feelings were running high and, if not, that is just a sign of yet more negligence.

United should have known what to expect; they should have been ready but, instead, the club heaped yet more embarrassment on itself with another shambolic failure. Once again it is guilty of ignorance.

'I hope the Glazers now understand why us Manchester United fans are so angry'

While some people crossed the line by breaking in to Old Trafford, the scenes show just how much we don't want the Glazers in charge, says Manchester United Supporters Trust Member Aaron Beresford.

I’m a member of the United Trust who helped organise this event. I came down here to help bring forward the issues we have at this club. I love this club more than anything in this world and to see our club on a decline over the last 15 years - financially, it’s been on an incline - is not the way we’re supposed to function as a football club.

I wanted to be here to have my voice heard, to be part of a crowd that loves Manchester United but, unfortunately, it’s been ruined by a couple of hundred people who decided it was a good idea to insult something we love so much by breaking in.

There are lines that shouldn’t be crossed and they’ve been jumped over by these people. We walked away when the gates opened. When the door opened a couple of hundred went in but I said to my mate, stay here, because I want to come back here and support my team.

Manchester United leave Lowry Hotel

The Manchester United team and coaching staff have been seen finally leaving the Lowry Hotel, where they had been camped out prior to the postponed match against Liverpool.

This was supposed to be a huge match with interest from all over the world. This was an opportunity for the Manchester United fans to make a big statement and that's why I think they've done it today.
The last few weeks have just pushed United fans over the edge. It's a huge statement from United fans. We don't know what damage has been done outside the ground but we have to applaud the fans. They've had enough. When you've had enough, you've had enough, simple as that. That's why they've reacted the way they have and I find it hard to criticise them.

05:31 PM

Gary Neville

I never thought they (the Glazers) were brilliant owners, but I've always thought in football there were worse owners. However, I think all football fans should today unite behind what Manchester United fans have done because what they (the Glazers) did two weeks ago was really dangerous for English football. We must not forget that.
They tried to walk away and create a closed shop league that would've created a famine - a famine - for every other club in this country. A famine in English football, in Dutch football, in German football, in French football, all over Europe.
Those 15 clubs would've walked away with their money and basically destroyed the ethos of promotion and relegation in English football. It's unforgivable what they did as a family.
The Glazer family tried to implement something that would've damaged every single community in this country that has football at the heart of it and that is why they are dangerous. Perez is dangerous, Laporta, Agnelli, they are dangerous to the concept of equal opportunity and fair play in European football.
Today there is anger, tomorrow I hope we move towards mobilisation towards reform and regulation via the fan-led review. Manchester United and Liverpool should act like the grandfather of English football, demonstrating compassion, spreading their wealth and experience through the family, being fair. They haven't done. They've demonstrated greed and tried to walk away with all the money, leaving the family struggling below. That is not what you do at these football clubs.

Graeme Souness

Is speaking about possible violence:

We’re all skirting round it - let’s be honest, someone threw a flare up to this stage today. If that hit one of us we’d be lying in a hospital bed, permanently scarred. That ain’t a laughing matter.

04:49 PM

Manchester United statement

Following discussion between the Police, the Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today. Discussions will now take place with the Premier League on a revised date for the fixture.
Our fans are passionate about Manchester United, and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest. However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff, and the police in danger. We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations.

04:48 PM

Premier League statement

Following the security breach at Old Trafford, the Manchester United vs. Liverpool game has been postponed. This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities.
The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance. We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated COVID-19 breaches.
Fans have many channels by which to make their views known, but the actions of a minority seen today have no justification.
We sympathise with the police and stewards who had to deal with a dangerous situation that should have no place in football. The rearrangement of the fixture will be communicated in due course.

Still no update on possible kick-off time

But our former colleague, Mark Ogden, the man who broke Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement story in The Telegraph, has said on the BBC that he understands a deep clean of the 'red zone' ie places where the players go, will take approximately 90 minutes.

04:20 PM

All quiet now at Old Trafford

But the question remains - how far inside Old Trafford did the protesters penetrate and if they were in areas where players gather, dressing rooms and tunnel etc, can they be disinfected sufficiently to comply with football's Covid-19 protocols.

Mike McGrath writes from Old Trafford

It is understood that the Football Association will liaise with the Premier League and police into the investigation into the match being delayed.

During the day but it seems the police have dispersed all but a few hundred beyond Hotel Football and down Sir Matt Busby Way.

More Neville

What I do think is achievable in English football at this time if that every fan in this country - whether it’s an EFL club or a National League club that’s struggling and dying like you wouldn’t believe, whether it’s grass-roots facilities in the community and you can’t afford to keep your pitches in a good state, whether you’re the 14 Premier League clubs outside the top six - you really know that you’re in danger from those six.
There’s a fan-led review that’s been announced in the last week by the Government, and there is independent regulation that could be achievable if fans mobilise together. We need to make sure there are protections put in place against these six owners. They are a danger to English football and to one of the greatest assests England has.

03:27 PM

Gary Neville on the protests

This is the consequence of the owners of Manchester United’s actions two weeks ago. There’s a general distrust and dislike of the owners, but people weren’t protesting before this happened. Generally, the Glazer family along with a number of other owners of football clubs in this country were conniving and scheming behind everyone’s back to walk away with the crown jewels. Today we’ve seen people protest at that.

03:16 PM

Roy Keane on the Glazers

I have sympathy with the fans, 100 per cent. It’s a tipping point for them. It was peaceful. One or two bottles were thrown and a couple of flares - I think that was towards Jamie to be fair - but they’ve had enough.Enough’s enough. United have some of the best fans in the world and we’ve seen today that they’ve come to the end with the ownership.

03:12 PM

Souness on the Glazers

I don't think this will impact on their thoughts one iota. These are serious business people who live 3,000 miles away across Atlantic. It will not impact on them at all. They're not ripping the heart out of Man Utd, they pay themselves a dividend. They are business people, they had to stake collateral to take this club over. They have given the managers since Fergie £719m to spend.

We don't know if the game will go ahead or, if it does, when it will kick off but here's the team news if it does:

Manchester United make two changes from Thursday - Dean Henderson and Mason Greenwood replace David De Gea and Edinson Cavani.

Liverpool have Nat Phillips in the heart of defence with Ozan Kabak, Fabinho, Thiago and Milner in midfield and the usual front three with Diogo Jota back on the bench.

02:31 PM

Ian Whittell reports

Fans started gathering at Old Trafford around 1pm and within an hour several thousand had congregated around the ground's superstore.

Numerous yellow, green and red flares were let off with police and stewards eventually being forced to remove plastic barricades for safety reasons.

That allowed fans access to the Munich Tunnel, approaching the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand, where it is believed, a group of supporters gained access to the stadium via a side "exit" door in the disabled section of the ground.

Police supported stewards in reinforcing a metal gate that had been pulled across to prevent supporters moving closer to the dressing room area but the match officials were reportedly unable to gain access as kickoff approached.

Manchester United fans break onto Old Trafford pitch in anti-Glazers protest

Manchester United fans demonstrating against the club’s Glazer family owners have stormed Old Trafford and protested on the pitch ahead of today’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool. Hundreds of supporters have been pictured inside the stadium two hours before kick-off. The protests had been planned for more than a week in a backlash to United attempting to join the breakaway European Super League.Protests were planned for the forecourt of United’s stadium but there were attempts to get down the Munich tunnel and some managed to force their way into the ground.

Mike McGrath has the main story here.

02:23 PM

Good afternoon

And welcome to another instalment of the 'Super League Six', AKA 'the Dirty half- dozen, reaping the whirlwind of fan displeasure after their contrivance in the plot to change football. Such was the incompetence of the participants in the scheme and so flimsy their alliance, that it was blown away within two days but having successfully stopped the clubs they have supported and nourished for more than a hundred years dismissing them as 'legacy fans' as they rid off into the sunset for riches further afield, now they have provoked fans into questioning the dubious ownership models of remote billionaires who stay silent and rarely venture across the Atlantic.

Today's scenes at Old Trafford where hundreds of supporters have invaded the stadium to protest against the Glazers is their fate.
