Manchester United meet Southampton at Old Trafford this evening and will lift themselves up to third in the Premier League for the first time since the opening day of the season if they can beat Saints.

United are fifth, one point behind Leicester City who lost dismally to relegation-threatened Bournemouth last night, and could be third by the end of the day by leapfrogging Chelsea too, who are only two points above them after losing at Sheffield United.

However they face a Southampton team who are unlikely to roll over, having hit a good spell of form themselves, with wins over Watford and Manchester City helping to lift them into top-half contention.

Saints will have to contain the threat of Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial as well as Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, if they are to gain a result.

Here’s everything you need to know:

Line-ups

Manchester United: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Pogba, Matic, Fernandes, Greenwood, Martial, Rashford

Southampton: McCarthy, Walker-Peters, Stephens, Bednarek, Bertrand, Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Redmond, Ings, Adams

Prediction

Saints are in good form but they are up against the most potent attacking unit in the league right now. With the Champions League dream now so close, United will surely be too motivated to slip up, even if this one proves a little trickier than some of their recent games. Manchester United 2-1 Southampton.
