There is no Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United as they look to put together a much-needed run deep into the FA Cup when welcoming Aston Villa to Old Trafford for an FA Cup third-round clash tonight.

As revered as Ralf Rangnick is within coaching circles, the problems at United appear to run deep. A squad built on celebrity in lieu of a consistent plan, it’s hard to see how a manager of his profile fits in, talented as Rangnick may be at building clubs coherently.

Still, few would doubt the quality has available to him and he has also spoken about the possibility of deploying a three-man central defence.

Paul Pogba is still injured, and Rangnick has left Ronaldo out of the squad entirely, perhaps giving the striker a rest and saving him for Premier League action.

Edinson Cavani starts in his absence, with Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes also in the side.

Raphael Varane partners Victor Lindelof in defence, while David De Gea starts in goal and Dean Henderson misses out on the squad completely.

Man United XI: De Gea, Dalot, Lindelof, Varane, Shaw, McTominay, Fred, Fernandes, Greenwood, Rashford, Cavani

Subs: Heaton, Telles, Wan-Bissaka, Amad, Lingard, Mata, Matic, Van de Beek, Elanga

Watch: Lower body and core workout
