Maninder Singh Tells Virat Kohli To ‘Keep Your Ego In Your Pocket’ After Another Failure
Virat Kohli endured another batting failure – dismissed to his nemesis James Anderson once again – in the ongoing series against England when he was sent back for just 7 runs in the third Test at Headingley.
Anderson lured Virat Kohli into an expansive drive and nicked him off his outside edge through to wicket-keeper Jos Buttler leaving India in deep waters after having elected to bat first after winning his first toss on English soil as a Test captain.
Former cricketer Maninder Singh pointed out that before the Leeds Test, Kohli himself stated that batting in English conditions is tough.
He said that a batsman needs to give himself enough time in English conditions before going for such flourishing drives. He urges the Indian captain to ‘keep your ego in your pocket’ and practice himself first what you preach.
“Before the Test match, Virat Kohli had said that in these English conditions you’ve got to keep your ego in your pocket. And I think that is absolutely right,” Maninder Singh said told ESPNCricinfo.
“If he tries to dominate, like Virat Kohli usually does, these are not the pitches where he can bat like that. He needs to spend some time there, like he did on the previous tour where he scored almost 600 runs. Once you know the pace and know how much the ball is seaming around, they you can carry on playing your shots.
“These are not flat Indian pitches, where you can just put your foot forward and start driving. And what Kohli preached, he will have to practice. Keep your ego in your pocket,” he added.

Maninder Singh further observed that Virat Kohli is making the same technical and mental mistakes on the current tour which he made on his horrific 2014 tour.
Kohli has scored 69 runs so far, and all of his four dismissals have been caught behind via his outside edge.
“Virat Kohli is basically making the same mistakes that he was making on his first tour of England. He is playing away from the body. It could happen to you if you are not playing regular cricket. He got out a couple of times the same way as you did in 2014, when he just got a 138 runs in 10 innings.
“I think things start coming back – am I playing the wrong line? Should I be leaving these balls? All these Indian boys, in the first two Tests, they were leaving balls outside the off stump. I don’t know that happened in this Test match. They were wanting to play at it and paid the price for it. With Virat Kohli, he is going through a bad patch,” the former spinner further asserted.
After being blown away for 78 runs, India couldn’t make a comeback with the ball this time as English opener, Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed, put on an unbeaten 120-run opening partnership.
