The agent of Paris Saint-Germain ace Manuel Ugarte has already addressed speculation linking his client with Liverpool amid competition for his signature from Manchester United.

The 23-year-old made the move to the French giants last summer from Sporting CP, making 37 appearances in his debut campaign with the club. Despite forming part of a Ligue 1 title-winning side, the Uruguayan was in and out of the team during the run-in as he found himself benched for four of his last seven outings.

The defensive midfielder also found himself benched for both legs of Champions League knockout stage ties with both Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund. With a suspension coming in the middle of this period, his struggles in holding down a starting place under Luis Enrique have seemingly alerted some potential suitors.

Among them are the Liverpool's arch rivals United, who have reportedly enquired about the star's availability in recent days. That is according to Sky Sports News, while it was also purported by French outlet d L'Equipe that PSG have also offered the player to giants Juventus and AC Milan in the past month.

Speculation has also installed Liverpool as a potential next destination for Ugarte if he is set to leave the French champions, with his agent Jorge Chijane having even addressed the rumors directly to O Jogo. He said: "Liverpool? There is a lot of talk, but it is not the only club, there are others.

"There is much talk, but I am still not sure about the club. There are many possibilities on the table," he continued, as he strongly hinted that he is set for the Parc des Princes exit door. "It’s almost certain that he won’t stay, it’s sure he’ll leave. I believe the situation will be resolved."

These remarks are in contrast to the insistence from the player that he will remain in the French capital beyond this summer, with the midfielder having previously told Amazon Prime Video Sport "We’ll see. I would love to [stay at PSG]. We’ll have to see. For now, I’m here and enjoying the end of the season."

Although Liverpool's exact plans in terms of their transfer activity this summer are not clear, Ugarte would likely be sought as a long-term replacement to Fabinho - who departed last year. Since the Brazilian's sale, Japan captain Wataru Endo was bought by the Reds to fill the void.

The former Stuttgart mainstay impressed at points during his maiden campaign on Merseyside, with the the 31-year-old having made 42 appearances in his first season at Anfield. However, his advancing years mean that club chiefs may already be forward planning when it comes to options in his position.

When it comes to strengthening the team's options in the market this summer, new head coach Arne Slot confirmed that he would be involved in discussions with club sporting director Richard Hughes over the best way to move forward. He confirmed in his first interview in his post that he would be forming part of a recruitment team which will oversee business this summer.

The former Feyenoord boss had: "Me and Richard are going to work together when it comes to transfers but not only the two of us – there is a big backroom staff included in this as well. I think for me it is the way I have worked always and it for me is the ideal way of working because I can use the most of my time by working with the team and the time that is left will probably be a bit for the family and a bit to talk with Richard about how we can strengthen the team. But we already have a really strong team.
