Frank Lampard was back on the training pitch at Ryton on Monday morning looking forward to getting a full week of work into his Coventry City players.

The newly appointed head coach only had a couple of days to prepare the Sky Blues for Saturday’s first game in charge – a 2-2 CBS Arena draw with Cardiff – but the 46-year-old can’t wait to get his teeth into some dedicated sessions with the players to start getting over some of his ideas of how he wants them to play moving forwards.

He will be helped by his fresh additions to the coaching staff - former Millwall boss Joe Edwards and Chris Jones, both of whom have worked closely with Lampard before - as well as existing City coaches Rhys Carr and John Dempster.

Asked if he’s looking forward to having a full week with the players ahead of Saturday’s trip to The Den, the new City boss said: “Yep, absolutely, because coming into a job like this you see so many things you want to act upon straight away.

“I have watched so many games over the last ten days and they will always bring up things in possession and out of possession, and the last thing you can do is give the players a hundred messages on day one, so effective work on the training ground is the best message. So it’s really good to see we have a full week to work with them.”

One thing Lampard and his staff are likely to address is some of the ‘basics’ he identified at the weekend, including “first balls, second balls, fight and scrap and reactions, being a bit tougher...”

Asked if those basics are something you can teach and work on or is it more of a mentality thing, Lampard said: “I think it’s a bit of both. It’s a competitive thing that has to be trained on.

“I am a big believer in how you train is how you play. We have been in here and the lads were great in training for the first couple of days but that has to be what you take into a game.”

He added: “If we’re reflecting on the Championship, you always have to play well to win in the Championship. You do have to get the basics right, and I think the basics are those sorts of things. So training will be competitive and it will be hard, and they will have to take that and get on with that and then take it into games because I think if you can do that then you will improve it.”
