Marc Guehi ensures Newcastle United's 10-month wait goes on as Eddie Howe's own Palace woes continue
Newcastle United's wait for back-to-back away wins in the Premier League goes on after their last-gasp despair at Crystal Palace.
The word from inside the Magpies' camp earlier this week was 'consistency' but Eddie Howe's side have failed to string positive results together away from St James' Park in 2024. This, despite beating Fulham, Burnley, Brentford, Wolves and Forest [twice] on the road in recent months.
Newcastle's last consecutive wins away from home came just shy of 10 months ago when a 3-1 win at Villa Park at the end of January was followed up with a 3-2 victory at Nottingham Forest on February 10th, either side of a tense 4-4 draw at home to Luton Town.

The north east outfit are usually at their brilliant best on home soil but have tasted defeat twice at St James' Park during an up and down campaign thus far - in games they were expected to win. Newcastle were stunned by Brighton earlier in the campaign, despite dominating proceedings, while Monday brought a shock defeat to West Ham United.
For Howe personally, the wait goes on for a win at Selhurst Park as Newcastle manager, with his last taste of victory at the ground coming back in 2016 when he was Bournemouth boss. His team enjoyed just one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes on Saturday but a well-worked free-kick was bundled over the line by Palace defender, and Toon transfer target, Marc Guehi to send the travelling support wild soon after the interval.
The home side piled the pressure on in the final 20 minutes and got their rewards four minutes into five added on as a resilient Newcastle backline saw the ball evade Nick Pope at the death. Guehi, who needed to redeem himself after the earlier own goal, this time was the provider at the right end as Daniel Munoz netted from his cross.
"Consistency of results is a very difficult thing to get," Howe said this week. "Consistency of performances is the thing that we're looking for.
"It's been much better since the opening few games. We have performed pretty well, not at our best levels but pretty well for a sustained period of time.
"That's the Premier League this year, I don't know why that is but there's a lot of inconsistent results and that's reflected in the league table being so congested and tight. Apart from Liverpool I don't think anybody would say they've been where they want to be. That's the challenge for us."
The Premier League table was set to look a lot brighter for Newcastle until seconds before the final whistle, with Howe's side ready to jump up to seventh, just two points off second place, before the equaliser. Instead, they now sit 10th.
Next up, it's the visit of runaway leaders Liverpool at St James' Park.
