Marc Guehi hit with 'formal FA reprimand' over Crystal Palace captain's three-word Rainbow armband message
Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has been hit with a reprimand from the FA after writing a three word message on his Rainbow armband.
Premier League captains were asked to support the Rainbow Laces campaign during the weekend's fixtures, with 19 of the 20 skippers taking part - and only Ipswich's Egyptian international midfielder Sam Morsy refusing to wear one in his side's 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest. However Guehi faced criticism after writing 'I love Jesus' on his, with the FA launching a probe - but deciding not to formally charge the England international.
The defender is a devout Christian, with his father being a church minister. Saturday's clash with the Magpies was Palace's designated Rainbow Laces match, as the LGBT+ inclusion campaign returned to the Premier League for an 11th year. The reprimand means that neither Guehi nor Palace will face a charge from the FA. Guehi scored an own-goal against Newcastle before Daniel Munoz rescued a late draw for Palace on Saturday.
Law 4 of the FA's Laws of the Game allow "initiative slogans/emblems promoting the game of football, respect and integrity," such as Rainbow Laces, but forbid "political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images." But the FA have now told our sister publication Mirror Football that they have instead decided to contact Palace and Guehi to 'formally remind' them the appearance on, or incorporation in, any item of clothing, football boots or other equipment of any religious message is prohibited as stated in Rule A4 of the kit and advertising regulations.
Speaking to The Athletic in 2021, Guehi explained the importance of Christianity to his life, saying: “I’ve grown up loving God and when I have had the chance I still go to church with my family, and my faith is definitely a big part of my life. Faith is everything that I’m involved with, really; even in football, where I’m trying to be a role model and show God’s graciousness and God’s glory through my life.”
