Xavier basketball is in the middle of adeep tournament run that no one expected after the Musketeers suffered two near-fatal blows earlier this season.
First, Musketeers sophomore guard Edmond Sumner, who had averaged15 points and five assists per game, suffered a torn ACL in January, ending his season prematurely. Then the team suffered a brutal February slate, losing six straight games and what should have been doom for a battered program.
Instead, here they are late in March, set to tip against KenPom's No. 1 team, Gonzaga, itself an underappreciated mid-major that steamrolled through most of the regular season. The winnerheads onto the Final Four.
Musketeers' guard Trevon Bluiett has shouldered a ton of the offensive weight throughout the tournament, scoring 75 points in three games. He'll need to be kept in check for the Bulldogs to move on.
Look for Gonzaga's star player, Nigel Williams-Gross, to bounce back from a tough 10-point night against West Virginia in the Sweet 16. He shot just 2-of-10 from the field.
We'll keep this page updated throughout the game.
6:22:This has been fun so far. Gonzaga's 3-point shooting has been impressive.
