Manchester United players and staff came to the rescue of colleague Marcos Rojo on Thursday night, who found himself in dire need of a mid-match banana against Rostov.

United boss Jose Mourinho sourced the fruit from we-know-not-where before handing it to substitute Ashley Young, who was warming up further along the touchline.

Young eventually delivered the emergency banana before any more drastic action were required.

The banana may have been a timely intervention to head off any cramp brewing in the muscles of the Manchester United defender, as the hosts endured a more difficult evening than they had expected against the Russian side.

Mourinho's men eventually emerged 1-0 winners on the night, progressing 2-1 on aggregate, courtesy of a second-half Juan Mata tap-in.

Though United were dominant for long periods, Rostov enjoyed enough fleeting glimpses of attacking threat to make the Old Trafford crowd uneasy while the score remained 0-0.
