Marcus Rashford exclusive: Only one club Man Utd striker will sign on dotted line for as PSG anger over talks revealed
In the second part of an exclusive chat with trusted reporter Ben Jacobs, TEAMtalk can reveal just how far PSG went with their interest in Marcus Rashford, who only has eyes on signing one contract.
The England frontman has been in sensational form this season, and particularly since the return from the winter World Cup, scoring 24 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions.
However, with his contract running out in the summer of 2024, having taken up his one-year extension offer, a number of clubs are monitoring the forward’s negotiations over a new long-term deal.
Chief among his suitors are PSG, who see great value in the 25-year-old and are keen to add him to their already explosive forward line.
Indeed, the Ligue 1 giants actually held talks with the player last summer over a potential switch to Paris.
United, however, are deep in talks with Rashford over extending his stay. Indeed, in part one of our chat with Jacobs we revealed the player’s willingness to stay at the club but also to make sure that certain clauses are inserted into his new deal as an out, just in case the club starts to move backwards again.
But under Erik then Hag, things are looking up for United as they continue to fight on four fronts.
Indeed, the in-form Rashford is expected to start Sunday’s Carabao Cup final after overcoming a knock.
However, things could have worked out very differently following those talks between PSG chairman Nasser Al Khalifa and Rashford. Although, PSG ended up becoming frustrated after feeling they were used in the striker’s desire to stay at Old Trafford.
And speaking to TEAMtalk, Jacobs revealed just how everything went down.
He said: “The PSG desire to sign Rashford dates back to last summer. That was when Rashford held talks with the PSG Chairman Nasser Al Khalifa.
“Khalifa was really keen because PSG’s main priority is to buy relatively young. Rashford ticks that box. And to buy dynamic players that are goalscorers that are the right kind of characters on and off the field.
“So Rashford ticks a lot of the boxes in terms of PSG strategy. But when, interestingly, Al Khalifa spoke to Rashford this was before Manchester United triggered the automatic club option to extend the contract for a year to buy them time to get a deal done.”
PSG anger as Rashford stance becomes clearer
It appears, however, that Rashford‘s intention all along is to remain at United, as Jacobs explained further.
He said: “Rashford then opened dialogue with United after PSG initiated contact. And the French side felt there were a lot of games being played, and that they were being used as leverage to send a message to Manchester United, rather than necessarily engaging in talks that they thought could progress with a view at the time to signing Rashford in this summer.
“So they backed off because they didn’t think that there was a deal there to be done. And then Manchester United subsequently extended the contract by a year.
“And although PSG and many top of the European clubs would still love to sign Rashford if they can, Manchester United are now in pole position.
“Rashford did have doubts last summer when Cristiano Ronaldo was still a big figure at the club. It was also a new season abd United started that new season poorly.
“They had a new manager, nobody knew how he was going to settle in at that point. But a lot has changed between then and now. And Rashford is settled.
“As long as he’s settled, there’s only likely to be one club, who he signs for. And that’s Manchester United, which is why Manchester United are calm about the situation.”
