Marcus Rashford wants to stay at Manchester United and is expected to undergo some intense warm weather training in the US next month as he bids to hit the ground running under new manager Erik ten Hag.

The England forward’s future at Old Trafford has been the subject of uncertainty since it emerged in the wake of United’s 4-1 derby defeat to Manchester City in early March that he was weighing up his options.

Bayern Munich are believed to be keeping an eye on Rashford’s situation in the event other targets do not come off but the player has set his sights on winning back his place at United under Ten Hag and rediscovering his best form after the worst season of his career.

Rashford is expected to travel to the US where he will be put through his paces during a working holiday next month before he returns for the start of pre-season with United on June 27.

Once an ever-present for United, Rashford started just 13 of their 38 Premier League games this season as the club finished 35 points adrift of champions Manchester City and without a trophy for a fifth consecutive year.

Rashford missed the first two months of the campaign after undergoing surgery on a long-standing shoulder problem in the summer but he was largely frozen out in the final months of Ralf Rangnick’s interim spell in charge.

He started just four of United’s final 14 league matches of the season but felt being regularly moved around in different positions contributed to his struggles.

Having been left out of the England squad for the March internationals, Rashford was again omitted by Gareth Southgate on Tuesday for the country’s four Uefa Nations Cup matches next month.

Rashford is at risk of failing to make Southgate’s squad for the World Cup finals in Qatar later this year but the player is hoping a fresh start at United under Ten Hag will see his form and confidence return so that he can force himself back into contention with England.

Another United player hoping to force his way into Southgate’s World Cup plans is Jesse Lingard, who is due to leave Old Trafford as a free agent next month.

West Ham have enquired about signing Lingard on a free transfer, with the player attracting interest from a number of clubs, including AC Milan in Italy.

Lingard impressed on loan at West Ham during the second half of last season and manager David Moyes is hoping to be reunited with the 29-year-old attacking midfielder at the London Stadium despite the competition for his signature.

Relations between Lingard and United have soured over the past 12 months and his brother Louie Scott hit out at the club after the player did not get the chance of a farewell appearance in the final home match against Brentford this month.

Meanwhile, Mike Phelan - who served as an assistant to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rangnick - is not expected to form part of Ten Hag’s new-look backroom staff. Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren will be Ten Hag’s main assistants, with existing staff members, goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis and set-piece coach Eric Ramsay, due to stay on. A new first-team coach is also due to join the backroom team.

Discussions are ongoing about whether Phelan ends up taking on another role with the club.
